Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Unruh.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sam. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When my wife was pregnant with our first, she talked me into quitting my real job in order to make furniture for a living. I had been handcrafting pieces in my little detached garage on the weekends and she knew it could work. It was a bold move, but we haven’t regretted it for a second. What started as one in a garage is now twenty in a 100-year old church. It’s been a great ride so far!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Success is rarely smooth and we have had to learn a lot. The advantage of struggle is that it really makes a company become the best it can.
Early on it was about finding a business model that worked. No other company does quite what we do. We build furniture out of solid hardwoods in a 100-year-old church and allow you to get pieces in the dimensions, wood species, and finish that work for your space. Figuring out that foundational aspect of the business was the first big hurdle, but after that, it became things like outgrowing spaces, marketing strategy, and how to grow.
Unruh Furniture – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We offer a furniture buying experience. Our clients decide the style, dimensions, wood species, and finish of their piece. Then we handcraft it and guarantee it for life. No other company in the industry is giving this type of customization, with this quality, or with the guarantee that we offer. We take great pride in offering clients a piece of furniture that is uniquely theirs and can be passed down for generations.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
We are definitely a company that looks at the numbers like shop efficiency and the number of bookings, but personally, I would define success by seeing incremental improvement. It is rare to find a company or individual who just skips the day in and day out grind of improving their craft. So each of us here knows that in order to continue offering the best product, customer service, and overall furniture experience it will take intentionality in the small things.
