Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Malone.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As far back as I can remember I have always had a fascination for photography. I used to play around with an old film camera my mother had and nothing gave me more joy than picking up a roll of developed film and being transported back to the moments reflected in the photos. However, I never thought that photography would be more than a passing hobby.
Fast forward to me out of college and working a full-time job with no creative outlet. By this time my fascination has turned to combative sports, think Mixed Martial Arts and boxing. Needed an outlet in which to create I began writing about these sports that I loved. Writing was a way to capture the essence of a combatant and the emotion ebbs and flows of a fight. At the time I was writing for a couple of online publications as well as a magazine based out of Houston. During event coverage, I would have a photographer with me and we made a great team. That was until he opted to find his fortune by taking a job overseas.
Left without a photographer to provide photos to accompany my articles I picked up an old Nikon DSLR that I had laying around and began to shoot the fights I was covering. Almost instantaneously I fell in love with the way the pictures told a story. Even in my best writing streaks, I could not capture the intricacy and beauty of combative sports in the same manner that a great photograph could. Soon after I ditched the pen and pad and picked up a camera and began my journey of capturing some of North Texas’ biggest fights and prolific athletes.
These days I have expanded my photography from strictly sports to concert photography, event photography, and dance photography.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It most certainly has not been a smooth road. When I was cutting my teeth in the fight game, I found that a lot of the established photographers did not want to help me or answer any of my questions. There was this unfounded fear of competition and the funny thing about it was that none of us were making any money!
Because of this experience, I always make it a point to help out any aspiring photographers who may have questions or concerns.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Malone Creative – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
So Malone Creative is a photography and videography collaboration with my wife, Amy. Our primary focus is still on fight photography but we have branched out to do any and all type of event photography including concerts, church worship events, and hip-hop dance battles. It’s been a great ride!
I think I am most proud of our reputation in the area. Those who we have partnered with seem to really enjoy our transparency and professionalism. Again, we are pretty small in scale and selective with whom we work with but we give every assignment 100%.
What sets us apart is our love and respect for the sport of MMA and boxing. A lot of people enter into this genre chasing money but don’t have the love or respect for the sport. We, on the other hand, have an admiration and respect for all the participants and the sport itself.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our future plans are to just keep grinding this year while trying to diversify our work.
