Meet Veronica Hackett of Sofishticated Design in Lake Highlands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronica Hackett.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Veronica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always loved to draw! Throughout my life drawing has often been a form of expression for me. So, in 2016 as I was in the midst of being love struck by my now-husband, I drew! I started with a portrait, pencil on paper, of our little family: myself, him, and our two cats. I shared this with my immediate family and next thing you know my sister made a request, then her friend, then a friend of a friend. And so, it began! The word spread and before I knew it my orders were stacking up. It was a great problem to have, but at that time it was a lot for me to handle. So, I took a break from Sofishticated Design, got married, moved, but eventually found myself wanting to draw again. Fast forward to the end of 2018 when I decided to make a full comeback, and here we are! I’m still taking custom portrait orders, as they are one of my favorites to do, but now I’ve added greeting cards to the mix!

Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all! Putting myself out there as an artist has been the most intimidating part of it all for me. It’s so easy for thoughts to pop into your mind and stir up self doubt. I found that a lot in my case, especially while I’m still finding my voice and growing in my style of creating. Self-doubt is really a tricky thing and I definitely don’t want it to prevent me from reaching my highest potential! The way that I’ve learned to combat this is by focusing on strengthening my skills, fostering my creativity, and above all appreciating artists that are doing similar things to what I am doing without being totally intimidated by them.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
As my tag line goes – “I like to draw cute pictures of cute humans and cute animals.” In other words, I’m most known for my custom illustration portraits. My portraits are hand drawn on an iPad and printed for delivery. I love capturing small details that help identify who each person really is – like a favorite t-shirt, a freckle, go-to hairstyle, etc.

I’m also very excited about my greeting card collection. I have a handful of very ‘punny’ greeting cards in my Etsy shop that will continue to grow over the next few months. This greeting card project has been especially fun because it’s a collaboration with my husband, who happens to be a local comedian. The puns typically come from his witty mind and then I draw them out. We get to share in this creative process together, which kind of brings things back full circle since he was my biggest inspiration to start drawing again!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely! Dallas continues to grow so quickly and is truly a hub for small businesses. I’ve also noticed tremendous support from other small and local businesses, especially when it comes to collaborating, sharing space and experiences, and promoting one another. The trick of it all is just believing in yourself and fearlessly putting yourself out there!

Pricing:

  • Custom Portraits start at $40
  • Greeting Cards are $4.50 each
