Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim and Crystal Terry.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We came to the Dallas area because of a death in our family. Our oldest brother, a single dad of five, died of cancer. So we moved from Anacortes, WA to help play a role in our nephews and nieces lives. We have been pastors for 30 years and realized a significant lifestyle change in direction was coming. We had previously flipped a house in Washington that had some great treasures in it and we had a love for coffee. Combining both seemed the natural thing to do. Crystal’s brother and family own the #1 coffeehouse, Hidden House Roasters, in Orange County, CA and they graciously partnered with us as we explored the wonderful new world of coffee. Farmhouse Coffee & Treasures was born in 2017 with the goal of combining stellar coffee, creative treasures, and the opportunity for people to build faith.
We were looking at homes in the really cool neighborhood of Harvest at the corner of 407 and 35W. We saw a beautiful old farmhouse in the center of a Hillwood master-planned community and wondered what was going on with it. We became connected with the executives of Hillwood and a wonderful relationship was born. We are now in this beautiful original 1878 Faught family home complete with original floors, stairs, doors, and local history. We consider it an honor to have met the Faught family and hear the timeless stories of a Texas family heritage that unfolded in this historic home. We love sharing its’ rich history with our guests.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning a small business comes with many challenges. It is hard to launch a business from the ground up. The challenges have come in many forms: finances, marketing, significant time demands, still actively parenting teens, and figuring out the desires of the customers. Fortunately, we started this adventure with several family members on both sides of our family. Our kids and nephews/nieces, who are all millennials, have dedicated the last two years to making this business a success, as well as our parents who have been heavily involved.
Please tell us about Farmhouse Coffee & Treasures.
One of our most welcome surprises has been the complicated science of coffee. We are proud to brew the best coffee in Texas. Voted Best of Denton County in 2018 was an honor for us as a year-old business. Combine the best coffee with the sweetness of our old farmhouse, and you have a beautiful place to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee. Our primary mission has always been to add culture and value to our community. From the first friendly hello to our treasures and coffee, we endeavor to create an experience where customers feel highly valued and cared for. Our primary ingredient in all of our products is love. We have also created culinary delights with our pastries and Saturday morning family breakfasts (8-noon). You can always find a great piece of crustless quiche as well as our breakfast burritos that our customers keep coming back for.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Jim – Family game times, Christmas Eve trips to the nursing home for caroling, many missionary guests in our home as well as other guests because of my parents’ hospitality.
Crystal – gosh… so many! family time in the wide open spaces of South Dakota, riding horses, church time as a family, riding motorcycles and driving a 1964 Barracuda. 24 moves as a child, many between South Dakota and Washington. Cousin time and rv trips with grandparents. So many rich family memories!
