Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith Cowser.
Meredith, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
One Social Girl started in a way that surprises most people…as a blog about knitting and crochet! When I was a junior in college, I was searching for a creative outlet to get me through a difficult season. I decided to give knitting a try and taught myself through YouTube videos. I was hooked immediately! I started crocheting soon after and a friend of mine encouraged me to blog about my new craft. Even though I had no idea what I was doing, I decided launch my blog, One Sheepish Girl. I shared photos of my projects, crochet patterns, and little bits about my life. Eventually, I started sharing my work on social media and found myself part of an incredibly creative community.
At the time, I was studying English and journalism and thought I wanted to be a magazine editor one day. By the time graduation rolled around, I found myself with an incredibly successful blog, thriving social media accounts (before the word “influencer” existed, haha), and a contract to write a book of crochet patterns. I really wasn’t sure what to do next! At that time in my life, I was too scared to pursue my business full time and found myself applying for jobs in marketing. After working for a few years in a corporate marketing department, I was encouraged my managers and mentors in my life to take the leap and pursue freelance social media management. Almost three years ago, I decided to dive in and One Social Girl was born! I launched One Social Girl as a one-stop-social-media-shop! I am able to create the content, shoot and style photos, manage posting, write captions, engage with their audience, design email newsletters and more! I am so thankful for the incredible clients I get to work with and the ways I get to use so many of my passions on a daily basis.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are definitely ups and downs that come with starting a business and relying on contract work. The instability, the self-doubt, the seasons of hearing a lot of “No’s” can definitely take a toll! Taking the leap and allowing myself to pursue this full time was one of the biggest struggles. I believed I would somehow be letting people down if I left the corporate world and chose a career that was less conventional. I finally realized that I can’t make decisions based on what I think will make other people happy. That is no way to live! Taking that leap, launching One Social Girl, and believing that I had skills to offer this world was such a big deal for me.
It’s also a struggle find balance when most of my time is spent on social media. In some ways, after transitioning from One Sheepish Girl to One Social Girl, I felt like I lost my voice. I write and create so much content for others that my own content is a lot quieter these days. I know my voice is still here! I guess you could say I’m in the process of finding it again and searching for new inspiration.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about One Social Girl – what should we know?
One Social Girl is a one-stop-social-media shop!! I offer product/model photography, social media content creation and management, email newsletter design, caption writing, audience engagement, website management, and more! I love being able to offer such a wide variety of services to my clients so they can feel confident that their brand will have a cohesive voice and style on social media. I know some companies and agencies offer a few of these services, but I’ve heard from several of my clients that they love that I can “do it all” and really streamline their social media management.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Rocky Garza played a huge role in pushing me toward starting One Social Girl. I went through his business consulting program and his course truly turned everything around in my life. His wisdom, guidance, and friendship transformed my life both professionally as well as personally since he introduced me to my incredible husband, Wade. 🙂 I consider myself lucky to call Rocky my friend!
