Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharnelia Johnson.
Sharnelia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been creative. I love to sing and act and draw. It wasn’t until I was 27, five years into teaching, that I realized I could do something that involved all my interests; makeup. I have a background in education which I feel helps with my makeup tutorials and with my lives. I am so happy to now be able to draw again but just on a different canvas. In 2018, I got the opportunity to take my talents beyond Dallas and go to New York. I am looking forward to continuing to travel and spread my love for makeup around the world.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has NOT been as smooth as road as I would like. I serve an amazing God and I am so thankful for my support system. I jumped the gun and stopped teaching to fully dive into my art too soon. I learned a valuable lesson about being fully prepared for the next chapter versus being tired of the current chapter. I was tired of teaching but not fully prepared to exit my profession. I had to move home, bartend and work way harder than necessary to fund my dreams. I advise everyone to not quit that daytime job until your dreams can pay some bills. Entrepreneur life is not easy but its easier when you have solid compensation to depend on.
Please tell us about what you do.
I am a Beauty Influencer and a makeup artist. I film instructional videos and funny sketch’s all about beauty. I also love to beautify bridal parties. Weddings are my favorite. I pride myself on being different from the rest because of my comedy. If you watch my videos you are bound to smile and if you ever sit in my chair you will have a fantastic time.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
The only barrier in life is fear. Fear will keep you from opportunities and keep you stagnant. As a female of color, it is important for me to not conform or meet the barriers of this industry but instead continue to push and break through. The only thing stopping me is myself.
