Meet Theresa Braddy of Boutique Talk Counseling in North (Lewisville)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Braddy.

Theresa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and owner of Boutique Talk Counseling PLLC. From a clinical perspective, I operate from a Cognitive Behavioral therapy perceptive when addressing depression, anxiety, sexuality, and trauma issues. I am motivated, passionate and committed to the healing process. I teach master level classes, as an Adjunct Professor at the University of North Texas in the Department of Rehabilitation and Health Services.

In the past, I have worked in the area of diversity while employed at The University of North Texas in the Division of Institutional Equity and Diversity, as their Senior Diversity Specialist. In this position, she facilitated sensitivity training and programs related to multicultural issues. I focused on six domains including race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, veterans, and generational management.

I have over 20 years of experience in counseling. Prior to moving to Texas, I worked in the private, non-profits, and government sectors in my home state of Ohio.

Women’s issues have always been my focus. I address such issues as depression, post-traumatic stress, balancing life, sexuality, and adolescent adjustment. She also founded a company in Toledo, Ohio called Sistergirlfriend LLC, to address women’s issues in a group setting. Being committed to her community, I fostered two young ladies who continue to thrive in their adulthood.

I am the author of A Girl Has Needs But a Woman Knows What She Wants. The book is a single woman’s guide to healing and understanding the complexity of intimacy.

I also regularly appears as a relationship/sex expert on podcasts and local talk shows to offer hard-hitting relationship tips to women across the globe.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No it was not easily but worth it! My main obstacles included:

1) People tellling me I would not be successful including an ex-boyfriend who told me I was too passive to be a therapist. However, my parents were my biggest cheerleaders. Their support has been a beacon for my determination.

2) I tried to start my practice three times, transitioning from Ohio to Texas had it’s challenges. Having no connections in Texas made it difficult but I was determined and the 3rd time was the charm. Persistence despite the odds is critical to success.

3) Capital to start an individual practice was a major obstacle. I started in the conference room of law practice. I would pay by the hour. It took me year to break even and now I am in my own office.

4) It took me 10 years to publish my book. For many reasons including writer’s block, I could not decide on content, but the big one was I did not know what I was doing as it related to publishing. But once I got serious and I stepped out on faith, doors were opened, and I walked through them. Kept it moving!
