Today we’d like to introduce you to Analisa Rodriguez.
Analisa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always had a love for makeup. Growing up, I wasn’t allowed to wear much makeup but that didn’t stop me from sneaking in some eyeshadow and lip gloss in the restroom before first period every day. It wasn’t until out of high school where I really got a knack for it. The colors called my name and spoke quite loudly. I watched countless YouTube videos, studied color theory, and books from Kevyn Aucoin to really hone in my skills. For years, I took pride in my abilities in my work, but only on myself. It wasn’t until a former co-worker/friend of mine asked me to do her makeup as she was standing in a wedding. After declining numerous times, I finally gave up and gave in to her request and decided we should do a trial run. That weekend, I took my things to her house and tried it out. She ended up loving everything I did and we decided to move forward with the real appointment later that month. I was still so nervous for my first *real* booking but my friend was so confident in my own skills, she decided that another girl was going to have her makeup done by me as well. The day of the wedding, I arrived and got straight to work. I finished my friend’s makeup and midway through the second, there was a small commotion. Another bridesmaid came to me and asked me to do her makeup, as well as the only other makeup artist in the room, had to leave as she had double-booked her day. It was at that moment, I booked my third client and decided this is what I wanted to do. The next wedding party I booked was for 12 clients in total. After that day, I knew I could do anything and so did everyone else. From there, I slowly gained traction and began doing makeup more and more for friends and family. My client base initially stemmed from word of mouth but by the powers of social media, they now come from all walks of life from all over central Texas and I’m able to provide myself as a full-service free-lance makeup artist.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road and even to this day, there are rough or slow patches. There are weeks at a time where I don’t have any weddings or clients booked. I would have potential clients cancel on me such short notice I would lose out not only other potential clients but lost time. Those hard times, I’m able to focus and regroup on myself and practice doing what I love, even if it’s just on myself.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
As a freelance makeup artist, I’m able to provide a full range of services. For all my clients, I provide makeup, lashes and even travel to them if necessary to ensure they have one less thing to worry about on their special day. I can be booked for all special occasions such as photo shoots, graduations, portraits, baby showers, or any sort of event you want to look and feel your best. What I’m mostly booked for are weddings. When it comes to wedding parties, big or small, they all are equally important and I want everyone to have a great time. I make sure my entire day is booked for this event and bring everything I need to the party. I keep my makeup kit and emergency wedding kit with me so I’m ready for anything that can happen – I’m a firm believer in that I’d rather be over-prepared than unprepared. I stay until I feel comfortable enough that all the clients have confirmed they love their makeup and they are all set. My clients’ happiness is what is important to me because when you feel like you look beautiful, it truly radiates from within.
Aside from being available for bookings, I love to practice on myself and really let my creativity loose! Themed makeup looks from holidays, local events to even fictional scenarios to give some extra color and life to my social media portfolio.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
There will always be an endless supply of clients but sorting out which makeup artist you want to go with is completely up to them. When starting out, you have to remember to not take it personally when they book with someone else. The building you clientele takes time but once you put in the work and continue to work at it, it will pay off.
