Today we’d like to introduce you to Autumn Jackson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all started with a meme, hurricane Florence, and a random misrouted text to one of my friends.
One day, I saw a meme on Facebook that simply showed the bottom side of the areas of a toilet. It stated, “You’re not cleaning properly if you don’t get all the way down and clean this, etc.”. I joke with my sister about the meme because our mother was a real stickler for cleanliness. Every Saturday before we could think about hanging out with friends, we had to do chores. This started at a very young age and she definitely made sure we were detailed!
On another random day, one of my friends got a random text saying she was hired by a cleaning business. She did not put in any applications. We joked about it and said, “hey let’s just start our own business.” We even tried to come up with names but the idea just fizzled over time.
At that time, I was working at State Farm where I became a licensed claims adjuster. I had big plans to leave the company and become an independent claims adjuster because they got almost triple my salary. I put in apps and waited for the next big storm to hit. Hurricane Florence was scheduled to be a big storm and the calls started coming in for new job opportunities to be an independent adjuster. I accepted on the spot and QUIT MY JOB IN ONE DAY. The same day, I accepted the offer I received a call from the employer stating they could no longer offer me the position until I was fully released from State Farm due to them having a contract together.
I was devastated and for the first time in years, without a job… I panicked for a few days and then it hit me… start your cleaning business! I used my last check to buy supplies and pay rent.
Thus, The Clean Queen was born and I’ve been rolling ever since.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Entrepreneurship has its hills and valleys for sure! There are days that I literally ask myself ” what am I doing”?
There are days when I have cried due to stress or simply wanted to quit after encountering super tough jobs.
My biggest obstacle is myself. I still struggle with fear. Honestly, I have slowed myself down many times due to fear of failing. I had a fashion business in 2016, I left my job and failed within three months. It took me years to make a comeback but I did.
My advice is to simply get out of your own way. Own your journey and live in the moment. Really take time to see yourself where you are, remember the tears and hard times because its all going to make one hell of a story. A story of victory. Celebrate the little things and remember where you came from. Nothing comes easy so keep pushing. Period.
My favorite random meme says, “Being broke is hard. Becoming rich is hard. CHOOSE YOUR HARD.”
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Clean Queen – what should we know?
I like to think that I am the Jill of All Trades. So, of course, I own and operate The Clean Queen. The Clean Queen brand is known for precision, detail, and hard work. I don’t turn down tough jobs. I take them head-on. Those are the ones that build my muscle and my brand. I love people and it shows through my outstanding customer service. I clean like I’m at home. I believe in respect and humility. That’s what The Clean Queen is known for. Due to my hard work, I have been 5 star rated on all platforms, and a Current Top Pro on Thumbtack out of hundreds of house cleaning companies in my area.
In addition to the cleaning business, I am part of RetroFuturstic which is an event and party planning company with myself and GoDJBoladi. We throw events that shy away from overly played radio music. Our more well-known events are Melodies and Mimosas and Situational Sundays. Melodies and Mimosas is a place where people can indulge in raw talent and art from the DFW area. Situational Sundays is a weekly party held at Mickey’s Sports Bar & Grill where we people can enjoy food and drink specials along with games in a laid back atmosphere.
The Retro brand hits you with an old school and new school vibe that keeps you dancing. At our events, it’s okay to just be yourself and have fun. #WeVibeDifferent
I also have my personal brand QWEEN ENTERPRISES that houses my event planning company, professional consulting, and start-up projects. Qween Enterprises will spearhead my upcoming exclusive dinner parties and networking events around the DFW area.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
My Mother for sure. She is without a doubt the most amazing women I know. My mother is brilliant and growing up she taught me to work hard and have my own assets. She taught me and my siblings the importance of blackness and culture. She raised us to be strong queens. My mom is strong. You can’t push her around, she is smart, detailed, and always a step ahead. This woman knows her stuff. All of it.
My mom also ran a few businesses alongside my dad. So, I was exposed to entrepreneurship at a young age. That’s a huge inspiration for me.
Growing up, I thought she was too tough but now as an adult, I can appreciate how much she pushed us. I absolutely HATED cleaning up as a kid. She taught us so many life skills and now I’m using one of those life skills as a viable business. There would be no Clean Queen without her. So, I thank her!
The crazy thing is, she had a cleaning business too when she was younger. I had no idea until after I started mine. I guess I’m a chip off the old block.
