Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonee Royal.
Tonee, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well, it started back when I was just about to enter the new school year. Ninth grade to be exact. My mother was supposed to either take me to get my hair fried, dyed and laid to the side or, do it herself. Not really sure. All I know is, she didn’t come through. She had to work. So, freaking the hell out, I searched for something to do with my head! Ain’t no way I was gonna start my year off with my oversized, fuzzy braids that I’ve had throughout summer. Boom! I found some “crochet hair” just chilling underneath the sink right, so you already know! I made it do what it do! Over so many attempted fails, I finally figured out how to BRAID MY OWN HAIR!!! Yes! Self-taught. Don’t be jealous, 💁🏾♀️ I did it! And it looked so good. Good enough to have my mama asking who the hell did we let in her house! Lmao! She wasn’t playing that mess! But I explained to her that it was I who slayed the infamous crochet braids. And there it is. That’s how it all got started!!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s honestly been a bit rocky. When it comes to me doing other people’s hair, because “I’m cool” or “they know me,” they THINK they’re supposed to get a discount… B*sh, What? No ma’am/no sir. Lol. I have responsibilities love, run me, my money! Hopefully, one of these days, folks will actually stop trying to get over and pay up!
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I can pretty much mimic any hairstyle. I’m always my first model, so I’ll do a hairstyle on myself. Whether its braids, a cut, quick weave, faux locs, any protective style, etc, I’ll try it on me, kill it (of course) and from there, bring on clientele. I’m also a self-taught artist as well. I love painting portraits of people, so my creativity runs deep. I’m most proud of my drive even when things aren’t going as planned. I never give up. Might take a break or two… or three, but I never give up! What sets me apart from others is my bold personality. So many of us are afraid to simply be ourselves, worried about what others may think. I ain’t with all of that! Stand out babe, not blend in!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have to give credit when credit is due. So, first and foremost, my children. (Closes eyes and gets very dramatic) I would literally be lost without them. They have always been my cheerleaders, rooting for me every step of the way. My homie Courtney who decided that this would be a great idea, leading me to you guys. Which is extremely heartwarming because women don’t praise eachother or support one another. She’s absolutely beautiful for that. Thank you, hot chocolate! My brothers who always let me I’m bad AF when it comes to this hair/art ‘tings! They keep me motivated and staying on stop no matter what! Love those guys. My mama who’s resting in paradise was also a huge supporter of my work. At one point, I use to do it all to please her. I know she’s still very proud of me (Miss you mama). Last but not least, my best friend Brandon T. He’s always been right here by my side, pushing me even when I wanted to quit. He’s supported me through thick and thin. I actually look up to him for a number of reasons. His love, discipline, commitment towards being the best, patience and drive just to name a few. I’m forever lucky to have these beautiful people in my life.
