Meet Sister Alley Gations of The DFW Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sister Alley Gations.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey with the DFW Sisters is different than most. I didn’t necessarily have a calling to become a Sister like most of us do. I just knew I wanted to help the community in a different way and be part of something bigger than myself. Becoming a Sister can be a tough road. You learn a lot about how charity works, about your community, both LGBT+ and straight, but most importantly, you learn a lot about yourself. During the process, you discover things about yourself that you didn’t realize before. You start to think a little different. Your mind opens up a lot more; you learn not to judge people for their choices. It’s an invigorating experience.

I have only been a Sister for a short time and I love what I do. I get the opportunity to speak with the community about safe sex, about who we are and what we do, and I get to know who my community is on a relatable/best friend level. I’ve had the opportunity to travel to other Sister houses around the country, meeting new people and spreading love and hope wherever I go. It’s only been two years and I have no plans on slowing down.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a Sister isn’t always about what struggles you overcame or what you foresee in the near future, it’s also about learning and growing. In the beginning, I had some personal difficulties with it and what all that meant, but I kind of figured it out along the way. It’s very similar to on the job training. We can’t teach you every scenario because we haven’t encountered all of them. Sometimes you have to figure it out as you go.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The DFW Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence – what should we know?
The DFW Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is an order of 21st-century nuns. We go out to the community and spread awareness on safer sex practices, fundraise for various needs, advocate for people, provide vital information on clothing, food, shelter and testing facilities. We are known for our crazy Sister names, our outrageous costumes and attire, our fabulous makeup, but most of all we are known for always being there when the community needs us.

I am proud of my fellow Sisters. It takes a special person to become a Sister and only the resilient make it through. We are a 100% volunteer-based nonprofit organization. We spend countless hours prepping for events, send numerous emails out, and making thousands of bliss kits every year, all in the name of charity and community. I am also proud of our community. We try out best to serve our community right. Without their support, we would not be able to do what we do.

What sets us apart from others is our personalities, makeup and our nonjudgmental mindset. We all have our unique personalities, some are louder than others. Our personalities are what make every Sister special. Our makeup and house coronets are the biggest attention-getters. We each have our own style of makeup, which reflects our personalities. Our makeup is also a form of anonymity. It allows us to have candid, raw, and personal conversations with people without them feeling judged. They can confide in us and allow us to help them. Our nonjudgmental mindset lets people talk to us about anything…..ANYTHING! We are open-minded and are willing to listen, learn and understand, which is the biggest key.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel my success comes from my personality, my charisma, and the support from my friends and family. I have a very loud personality and am naturally an extrovert. I like to be the center of attention, and I love to be where the people are. I am blessed with natural charisma and have learned how to leverage it for good. Lastly, I would not be as successful as I am without the support from my fellow Sisters, family and friends. Being a Sister can be challenging at times. It’s always nice to have a good support system in your corner whenever you need them.
