Meet Paul Aguilar of Dallas Hair by Jay in Uptown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Aguilar.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Paul. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I got started in the hair industry back in 2004 when I was tired of working in retail management. I have always been an artist so I thought if I went to a good school, I would be good at doing hair. I was also taking acting classes at the time and I figured it would be a good career to have if I decided to move to LA. So, I went to the Paul Mitchell School of Austin and I have now been doing hair now for 15 years and I still love what I do!

Has it been a smooth road?
I put myself through school so I had to work full time and go to school full time because I was determined to finish school as fast as I could. I am not going to say it wasn’t hard as far as I had very little extra time and when I did have my one day off per week, I would just try to rest. I had 70 hour weeks but I was determined to finish because I knew it would all be worth it in the end and I would be doing something I love.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dallas Hair by Jay story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in color, balayage, highlighting, cutting, smoothing treatments such as keratin treatments and I’m trying to dip my foot in the water with extensions. I love making people over and what’s not a better way going from short hair to long beautiful flowy hair! I’m most proud of how far I have come in my career and the knowledge I have learned from over the years. I have a great clientele that loves me and I love them! I think my personality sets me apart from others. I love to have fun with my clientele but I also can be a great listener and vice versa. My clients help me just as much as I help them.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I definitely am going to own my own salon within the next five years and I have also thought about going back to cosmetology school to be an instructor. I like being a mentor and helping others and teaching them some of the knowledge I have acquired over the years. I had great mentors in school and I would love to be that for someone as well!
