Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Sample.
Lisa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I founded Peace Love Wax in 2011, two years after completing my esthetics certification. It’s been an incredible journey and I’ve learned so much along the way!
I had always known that I want to own a business one day and had an entrepreneurial spirit, however, I certainly never imagined I’d be WAXING for a living! Prior to joining the beauty industry, my background was in criminal justice, which I also had a huge passion for… talk about a serious career change!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Opening a business has been a serious eye-opener and major learning experience to me in SO many ways. I definitely didn’t know what I was doing eight years ago when I opened, and even today I’m still learning new things. I attribute my growth and success to an open-mind for change and literally the best staff a person could ask for!
I’ve always aimed to be transparent; Sometimes, I make executive decisions that I later find weren’t ideal, in which case I admit it and make necessary changes. It’s all trial and error! I have found that honesty is the best policy; it commands mutual respect and open dialogue with both staff and clients alike.
My biggest struggle would probably be my trusting nature, which I wouldn’t change. I run my business with kindness and empathy for others, which isn’t necessarily the typical business-minded way. There have been a few times along this journey that I’ve been duped or taken advantage of. My knee jerk reaction is to pull back to protect my interests, however, I’ve learned that when someone takes advantage of someone else, it says more about their character than mine and I certainly can’t punish everyone for the actions of just a few. In the words of Michelle Obama, “When they go low, we go high.”
Please tell us about Peace Love Wax.
At Peace Love Wax, we specialize in hair removal via waxing and hair removal is all we do! (Fun fact: We also have a few technicians that offer sugaring!) Our most popular services are brows and Brazilians. What sets us apart from similar concepts is our dedication to quality over speed. We would rather a client’s service be perfect and as painless as possible than just quick. We also have a strict no-tipping policy; Our clients LOVE knowing what they’ll spend when they come in, they won’t be nickel and dime’d, nor have to awkwardly calculate a tip at checkout. We don’t do memberships and we don’t push products. We truly aim for clients to have exceptional service from scheduling to check out (and beyond)!
One of the things I’m most proud of is my incredible team. We have an extremely low turnover when it comes to staffing; Their dedication to quality and expertise is a true testament to their astounding work ethic and the culture I’ve tried so hard to create within my business. One of my greatest joys is seeing their own personal and business growth!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I’d probably have done more research on the front end. I dove in headfirst and figured I’d ask questions later. I’d have saved myself some mistakes down the road if I’d done a little more pre-planning!
