Meet Karla and Vivian Fernandez of Déz Beauty Lounge in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Fernandez and Vivian Fernandez.

Karla and Vivian, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up I was always very shy and struggled to socialize. One of my insecurities was my thick, curly, frizzy hair. So I made it my mission to control it! I watched so many videos and used what we had at home to fix it. My poor sister would let me cut her bangs, straighten her hair and pretty much do whatever I could convince her to let me do. In the process, I discovered that doing my hair and makeup gave me a great feeling of confidence that I wanted to share with everyone!

In order to make this happen, I needed the license to do it so when I finished high school I enrolled in the cosmetology program at Paul Mitchel the School in Arlington. As soon as I finished the program I was eager to work and practice what I learned. I knew I wanted my own business but I was going to have to do a lot to achieve that. I’ve had a lot of personal struggles and doubts but I’ve stuck to my goal because I believe in it. In my struggles, my job has helped me stay afloat. It’s not “just hair and makeup”. You can ask any of my clients, we have full-on therapy sessions! My sister has also found a love for this industry. She has developed so much talent as a makeup artist and continues to grow as a professional. This has allowed us to become business partners and puts us where we are today. We make a great team and we are working as hard as we can to build our name and grow our business!

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been easy! But, I believe there is no easy path to anything great. As long as you have the motivation and a good support system you can overcome a lot of things.

However, in 2016 we lost both of these very important things. My family was in a car accident both my parents were badly hurt and we lost our brother. This literally knocked us down to our knees but, we did what we could to help my parents through this. During this time, the months passed by so quickly we found ourselves a year later after my parents were physically in better condition trying to rebuild ourselves and keep going. This meant to keep living life in this new way that made no sense. This meant getting up and going to work again like normal. However, after all that nothing felt right so it is where Déz Beauty Lounge is born. To stay close as a family is where we found the push to start our own business. Many people don’t know this but the support we have found from this business is what has kept us going on a daily basis. It is where we have found a motivation to keep going to possibly build something.

Tell us more about the business.
We love doing a little bit of everything but I specialize in corrective color and cuts. My sister started out specializing in makeup but is now also specializing in color and cuts. And together, we are very grateful to be able to be a part of many weddings in which I do the hair and Vivian does the makeup. However, I would say right now was known more for our color correction transformations. We enjoy a good 6-hour chat getting to know our clients. I think that is one thing that sets us apart because we do our best to dedicate our time and attention to each one of our clients every time they come in. I think communication and honesty are what we’re really trying to build with each person that sits in our chair.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
We are entering a time in which people realize how far you can go with this industry. Like I said before it is not ”just hair and makeup” it causes a boost of self-assuring confidence that has taken women very far. Just look around we are taking over! I do see a big shift happening with the respect given to this industry overall and I’m excited to see how much more recognition it can receive.

This two young ladies are very talented, since the first time I met them both, I felt the passion in what they both do, in the beauty industry.
