Meet Gena Whalon of Salon EnVee’ in Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gena Whalon.

Gena, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Whew! Where do I begin…

Hair has always been a passion of mine. I started braiding hair when I was in the 5th grade. My family and friends would let me practice on them. Fortunately, we moved to a new area of town that offered cosmetology in high school.

Fast forward to 20+ years later… I’ve been licensed for 14 years and a salon owner!!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing in life is smooth… in fact, this has been one of the hardest obstacles that I’ve ever had to deal with. It truly is a test of your faith and patience. I can remember the days I would be in the shop from sun up to sundown, to almost sun up again, just to prove that I was dedicated and extremely accommodating to future clients. The early
mornings and late nights started to wear on my body and eventually cause health issues, along with no social life.

I even worked in a commissioned salon to get free training and build a steady clientele.

After six years, I transitioned my clients over to my salon.

BUT I wouldn’t have it any other way, I LOVE what I do and my wonderful clients are awesome!

Hard work and sacrifice really does may pay off, I just celebrated seven years in business!!!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Salon EnVee’ – what should we know?
I operate a full-service salon. With just ME as the operator.

I am known for short hair and I have to admit, it is my specialty. However, I do offer healthy hair care, precision haircuts, most weaving services, color and some natural hair services.

What my clients love most about my salon is… they don’t spend a day in the salon waiting to get serviced. I offer personalized services to each and every one of them, and lastly but most importantly, I DON’T OVER BOOK MY APPOINTMENTS.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Hands down my favorite person, my cousin, mentor, a HUGE role model in my life…

Ms. Vicki Lynn!

When I was younger, I used to sit in her salon for hours watching her to hair. Lol.

She has been my number one supporter since I started cosmetology. And then, of course, my mom, any wild hair, or crazy ideas… she’s down like four flats and right there by my side!
