Meet Mehreen Adnan of Mehrs Cake Corner in Allen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mehreen Adnan.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Cake baking has always been my all-time favorite hobby. When I was a teenager, I used to bake brownies, cookies and cakes almost every other day. The good part was, I could try out various recipes and combinations. And so even if they were little under or overcooked, my younger siblings finished them all up. But joking aside, that made me gain confidence and perfected over time.

I still remember that in the afternoon after my mom cleaned up kitchen post-lunch, I used to sneak into the kitchen and started experimenting. When she woke up and entered the kitchen, I distinctly recall her screaming and saying Mehreen, you again made something today with so much mess haha. But the good thing which I always admired that she didn’t tell me not to do it again which I always suggest to my friends with daughters and who are into baking and stuff that let them do it, practice will make them better.

While studying engineering half-way, I got married and came to USA. Within three years, I had my two children and got busy with them full time, but as they both started pre k n kindergarten I found some extra time for myself. Every year celebrating two birthdays made me think to one of their birthdays why not make a cake this time myself instead of getting it from outside.

So, I made a train cake for my younger one and served to all my guests and they couldn’t believe that literally I made it from scratch. After a few months, my elder son’s birthday came up and I made him Cars cake, which turned out to be a success like last time. It was then I realized that I can refine my skills and turn my passion into a business opportunity.

It was back in 2009-2010 that I got the word out. Seeing my passion and skills, firstly, friends from close circles started to inquire about making kids’ birthday cakes. At the beginning (like other entrepreneurs), I wasn’t too sure if I could carry on and will be able to take this to the next level. But a couple of successes built more momentum and took my passion to the next level. It was then I became almost certain that I can do it professionally, something which got started as a hobby.

That was the time when we were living in San Jose, CA. As the journey goes on, I started getting more inquiries even from total strangers (thanks to search engines and social sites). Some also through word of mouth, like those guests who attended parties and seen/tasted my cakes. Seeing early signs of success made me feel so happy and more thrilled.

Coming 2013, we moved to Dallas Texas. Here I came to know that it’s legal to bake and sell from home. After some research got my food handlers certificate and registered my company in Collin county. It’s been more than six years now and my week is busier than the previous one. My success is built upon several things, notably passion designer skills, novelty, innovation, better customer service and above all growing interest.

I am hoping not to stop anytime soon and widen the scope and scale of my business. Opening up a bakery is my next target, which by the grace of Lord should be able to achieve in the coming years.
