Cut Jon Alexis open and he bleeds salt water. As the owner of Dallas institution TJ’s Seafood Market & Grill, (“Best Seafood” 2010-2016) and the highly anticipated Malibu Poke, Jon is passionate about seafood…and how it can change peoples’ lives. From leading seafood tours of Alaska to teaching seafood education lessons at Dallas culinary schools, Jon is considered Dallas’ premier seafood expert. “Alexis is a walking advertisement for the seafood industry” states D Magazine. “His relentless dedication to quality and service is unmatched.”
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Every day is a struggle, or better word choice would be a “challenge”…if it’s not challenging, you’re not aiming high enough. The first challenge I encountered in my career was updating a business that had at the time a 20 year brand history. As we changed and improved our operation, we met customer resistance who liked “the way things used to be”. But we earned their trust as they saw every change was based on a desire to improve our product and service.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the TJ’s Seafood Market & Grill and Malibu Poke story. Tell us more about the business.
TJ’s Seafood Market & Grill is a seafood restaurant, market and catering company.
We import the world’s freshest seafood and serve it in different aspects of our business. I feel my main duty is as an educator – my job is not to sell people fish. It’s to teach them about where seafood comes from and what differentiates quality and freshness. Then, as our business provides the best in both of those regards, the “sale” simply flows from that education.
Malibu Poke will take that same commitment to quality and freshness and bring that to the fast-growing poke segment.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?

Of course, luck plays a role in anyone’s success. I’ve always been inspired by the quote above – essentially stating that to be lucky, you have to put yourself in the position to receive that luck. No one ever found a dollar bill while sleeping in. You gotta get out of bed and walk down the street.
