Meet Nicole Hutchison

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Hutchison.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Nicole. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, u was a kid that was the only child, and pretty much followed the leader. I know, typical thing that no one would admit to. I wasn’t sure of what I wanted to do, or where I could see myself later in life, but when my parents put me in soccer, tennis, track, and pretty much every sport you can think of- That’s when I knew I wanted to be a sports reporter. Theatre pretty much prepared me to be live being in front of the camera. My dad played for the Chicago Bears, so pretty much sports was all I knew growing up. I went to Howard University on a full sports scholarship and immediately started working with the Washington Redskins during my freshman year. My parents were splitting at the time, so it pushed me to just be more focused in that area. I started interning with NBC Sports in DC, NBC Sports in Connecticut, reporting for ESPNU, the Mystics and HBCU Gameday, the Wizards and more. All of those of those opportunities led to where I’m at now. I’m currently a Sports Anchor and A reporter for KALB News Channel 5.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My parents separating took a huge toll on me. Only my closest of close friends know this, but I went into somewhat of a depression. Of course, I wouldn’t tell my mom that because that would bring more problems on her, but I knew at the end of the day I had to handle my business, graduate, and have a job in my field once I finished. So if anything, that helped me really stay focused and push. That’s why I kept myself busy, reporting, working with Howard football, playing college tennis, homework, praying and interning some more. That’s what really helped me get through everything.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a sports journalist. What I’m known for I would say is my knowledge of sports. Most first day that wants to do sports journalism because they think it’s easy and because they are “cute”. It’s not all about that. It’s about putting in the work and working five times harder than any man does. I work so hard because this is what I want to do. But not only do I want to be a sports journalist, I want to be a real estate agent as well. I start studying in January to take the test. It’s never been done by a woman in this industry, so I want to be the first to do it.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
“Keep your circle small”. I had to learn that not everyone has your best interest at heart. Friends or not friends, some people still don’t want to see you win and that was my main issue. I’m a very friendly person, and I love to help everyone. I just had to learn this hard way that the same thing won’t always be reciprocated.
