Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Munson.
Rachel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been interested in style and entrepreneurship, but I never thought I could make a career out of it until college. I started taking advertising and marketing classes that all required side projects. I found myself constantly choosing to work on a personal brand that eventually became The Closet Dime.
Once I graduated, I knew I wanted TCD to be more than a passion project.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s definitely been a long road! My best advice would be to stick with your passion even when it feels like you’re not growing fast enough. I spent years developing the TCD brand while still working other jobs, starting other businesses, and learning along the way. I diversified my interests early! This made for slow growth but has resulted in longevity when I saw others around me giving up on their passions.
Please tell us about The Closet Dime – what should we know?
TCD started out as a small Blogspot webpage where I documented my stories and experiences surrounding fashion and beauty. It has since grown to a lifestyle website where I am able to have a larger reach in the industry, sharing all things lifestyle, health, and beauty.
As I’ve grown and become more reputable in the industry, I have had opportunities with other brands and companies to promote products, events and much more. I have the unique ability to take my professional background and work with companies, while still being in the influencer world and sharing insight with those big name brands.
Since starting TCD, I have gone from sharing my past style experiences to being a liaison between company and customer. It has evolved so much over the last several years, but I have loved every minute of the journey!
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
Women-led industries have come a long way over the last 5-7 years, but there weren’t always as many examples of strong female leaders like there are today. I came from a background in advertising (which was very male dominant) to a beauty industry that was still trying to help women find their place at the top. It hasn’t been easy, but I think as young girls see more women taking on leadership roles, the desire to mentor young women into those positions will take place. I, myself, have looked up to strong women and have asked for advice as often as possible.
