Meet Alejandro Salinas and Leilani Cortez of SugarBites in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandro Salinas and Leilani Cortez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Alejandro and Leilani. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Ironically, our story begins in a local boba shop where we were just casually hanging out. Our idea for our business was not necessarily something that came out of the blue, but we found inspiration from other content creators, foodie accounts, and travel blogs. The idea of running an account related to sweet treats came naturally because of our long friendship and love for delectable desserts. We were tired of routine and wanted to push the boundaries of our comfort zones. After graduating from high school, we found difficulty in being able to express ourselves artistically because of the time and effort that goes into attending junior college and working day-to-day jobs. A picture is worth a thousand words and what better way to express our artistic expression than through food and travel. We are a fresh, growing business that hopes to gather opportunities to showcase our artistic abilities and our passion for food and travel. Our philosophy is that art is subjective, and we are displaying our artistic abilities through the craftsmanship of photography.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing in life is ever going to be a smooth road. We would be lying if we said it was. There are days where it is difficult to balance work, school, and managing an Instagram page that is very interactive. We try our best to stay as active as much as possible, but there’s only so much time in one day. Some days, it’s difficult leading a growing Instagram account because we’ve hit an artistic roadblock and a lack of motivation. Other struggles that we have faced on our journey is a lack of collaborations, in regards to working with other shops or pages in the foodie community. We would love to display the hard work, talent, and amazing treats that Dallas dessert shops have to offer, but it can get a bit overwhelming as to which store to showcase. We would love to help encourage others to go and support local businesses but with so many out here in Dallas, sometimes we don’t have any idea where to begin. However, these obstacles have empowered us and made us grow more progressively in our work with this account. Not only has it helped us professionally, but personally as well. For this, we have to thank the hard times for helping us see the great times.

SugarBites – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
SugarBites is a local content creator. We are visual storytellers that want to introduce the many foodie (mainly dessert) shops that are scattered all around the DFW community. We specialize in taking pictures of the many shops we go to and introduce our followers to these shops that may have been unknown to them. We are most proud when we showcase the hard work and creativity that goes behind making some of these amazingly delicious treats. Some people may think it is silly to just take a picture of food, but you never know how one picture can help introduce a slew of new people and customers to a business. Like we said earlier, we view photography and travel as a form of art and art is subjective. We are a growing page and will only get better with time and experience with our photography and editing skills. We are a very follower-based company that isn’t afraid to try new and exciting desserts. We also set ourselves apart from other content creators with our in-depth critiques and personal interactions with the shops and all it has to offer. Our photos never begin with the food but with the business because we have to give the business the credit they deserve. We like to give an all-around account of the shop, just as much as the food because the experience there is just as important.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment in our career thus far is how supportive a lot of our family and friends have been in seeing us start this page from the ground up. They have stuck by our side and have recommended some amazing shops to visit. Our followers have also been a great influence on our food journey. They are always providing us with honest feedback as to whether we need to expand our selection of shops or how we can become more interactive with the community to showcase our growth and love for sweet treats. We will always be proud of the moments where people compliment our photos or where we have introduced a new shop for our followers to excitedly enjoy one day. We appreciate each and every follower that has allowed us the opportunity to show them the capability of our artistic expression and uniqueness.
