Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Nolte.
Michelle, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am an enthusiastic adopter of hobbies and have been creative from a young age. It was always easy to find a new art or craft to dive into. When digital cameras became more affordable, I had a better opportunity to experiment with photography. A short time later, a family friend asked me to photograph their wedding; I decided to accept the challenge. This remarkable request started my journey into wedding and portrait photography.
I started to accept portrait requests for invaluable experience and had an obsession to improve further. Over time, I was able to build my art into a business. At the same time, learning to network with industry professionals has created incredible friendships and opportunities that are still gratifying on many levels.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Over time I realized that certain sessions and events gave more joy than others. Being critical about what I love and don’t love about my art is always difficult. I knew there was room to improve my services and product by focusing on certain niche markets. Turning away jobs that didn’t fit my niche market was tough. Thankfully I have a great network of talented professionals to refer those clients too.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Wedding photography can be a lot of fun and allows me to mix up photography techniques. At a wedding, I mix fashion, styled, candid, and posed portraiture throughout the day. For individuals and couples, the focus is styled and posed portraiture. Newborn photography allows for me to be more creative using handmade props and sets.
Being able to offer products that clients cherish is deeply fulfilling. Knowing that a client leaves one of my sessions feeling confident or beautiful makes all the time dedicated to improving my craft worth it.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is daily work that creates a feeling of fulfillment, while also creating wealth that affords us to take care of our responsibilities. Working toward fulfillment, versus happiness, lets us work hard and delay gratification in order to reach goals. Creating wealth that allows room to invest, in ourselves and in the small network around us, lays a foundation for growth. This leads to a positive impact to our immediate circle with the potential to improve our community.
