Today we’d like to introduce you to Gracie Hart.
Gracie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have had a passion for doing hair since I was very young. I started styling other’s hair around 13 years old. I went to hair school my first time around in 2008 while in high school. I was supposed to finish and get my license in 2010, but I didn’t get the chance. I finally decided to go back to hair school (starting completely over) in 2013 becoming licensed the following year in Indiana. The following years were the hardest. I couldn’t figure out how to make self-employment work for me. In 2016, I buckled down and told myself I had to make this work because I hate working for other people. This is where I learned more about social media and marketing. In 2018, we finally made the leap to move to Texas. We have been talking about the move for three years, lol. We have been here only a year and it was the best decision for my beauty career.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road lol. I feel like cosmetology school doesn’t prepare you for self-employment. We learn how to style hair, but we never go over marketing. We never learn the major keys to getting butts in our chair to demonstrate all that we learned. We never learn about that go-getter mind state you desperately need during that time of building a clientele. We never learn how to stay encouraged during the times you are barely making enough to cover booth rent. And we don’t learn to never give up, because you will want to!
Please tell us about Crowned By Grace.
So Crowned by Grace is my identity separate from my shared company with my Fiance. I am a licensed Cosmetologist in two states currently. I specialize in braids and natural hair care. I am most proud that I have mastered the art of producing beautiful braid styles without snatching edges! My braids are neat, but not painful. My professionalism, attention to detail, punctuality (no double booking) and accountability sets me apart.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My first braid ever was on a barbie doll. And I don’t mean one of the stand-alone head barbies. I’m talking your standard barbie dolls lol. I am a true definition of self-taught. In recent years, I have had some training, but for the most part, I learned how to braid all on my own starting with that one barbie.
