Meet Christian Torres

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Torres.

Christian, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began a passion for photography at just ten years old. I would play with my mother’s Kodak Disposables on family vacations and around the house, indoors or outdoors. In middle school, my mother encouraged me to take a photo-design class. Although I was hesitant, I took the class and passionately learned the ins-and-outs of Adobe Photoshop. Soon following, I took a web-design class and another Photo-Design class helped me understand the fundamentals of web and graphic design.

In high school, I took more web and photo-design classes that pointed me to Photo-Journalism. Here, I learned how to use a film SLR camera and to develop my own film using the classrooms Black-Room. Junior year kicked in and the photojournalism teacher asked me to join Yearbook. After interviewing and showcasing photos that won awards the previous year, I was accepted.

As a rookie, I learned how to find stories, take photographs of events, sports, debates, or academic achievements. I would take students out of class for short interviews regarding events or stories that were being written for articles in the Yearbook. In the first year, I was awarded a Rising Photographer award. My senior year was filled with lots of photography and stories as I became one of the Photo Editors of the Yearbook.

College began with Black and White Photo1. Challenging me to focus and use proper exposures and light balance to capture beautiful images only displayed in black and white. With a passion for business, I used my skills and knowledge to take my photography out into the world, specializing in Nature and Landscape. One of my highest respected photographers and idols is Peter Lik. Seeing his Gallery in South Beach, Miami gave dreams and visions that I’m now fulfilling today. My 15+ years of experience gives me the ultimate power to adapt and create beautiful imagery.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For the most part, photography has been a smooth road. However, there were periods of time where I wouldn’t focus on the hobby due to school or other career paths I pursued. It becomes a challenge when this field is so competitive and you’re trying to make a name for yourself. At the end of the day, you need to stick to your gut and pursue your dreams no matter what people may say or think about you and/or your work. I’m fully capable of making this hobby of mine successful.

Christian Torres Photography – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The business really focuses on any type of photography or graphic need. Although I specialize in Nature and Landscape, those are just images I would like to display in a Gallery. I shoot models, events, newborns, graduates, families and engaged couples as well as our loving furry friends. I’m most known for my Nature shots and lifestyle shoots with models. I’m most proud of the work I’ve done with the models I’ve shot with here in Dallas. I would say what sets me apart is my creative passion for the field in general. I conceptualize ideas in my head and execute them very well and to me, that is art. I don’t get discouraged by other photographers because we are all talented and have our own way of doing things. I stay true to myself and I’m confident in everything I do.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success to be what I’ve accomplished in the past 15 years despite the competition. I’m happy and very proud of what I’ve created. Continuing to create and push forward is the only way for me to continue my success. I always look at my competitor’s work. I think we all do to better understand and appreciate each other’s work. I follow a few photographers and aspire to create in the same way they do but doing so in my own way. Peter Lik is the reason I will always shoot Nature and Landscape. The images he creates tells a story and make you feel something when you look at them. I want to give the same feeling his photos gave me to my viewers. I won’t stop until that mission is accomplished.
