Meet Jennifer Shaff and Kim Johnson of Town & Key in Plano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Shaff and Kim Johnson.

Jennifer and Kim, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The concept of Town & Key originated when Townhouse, a cozy, stylish North Dallas bar and restaurant, closed its doors in the summer of 2012. Townhouse was frequented by us and some of our dearest friends when we needed a much needed “mom break”. Afternoons were spent sipping chilled Champagne and sharing laughter, followed by shopping. When we learned that Townhouse was no longer in business, our unique vision to start our own boutique and shopping experience was born.

The most important aspect of those fun shopping days was the excitement of spending the day with friends, surrounded by endless camaraderie. Each girl brought their own unique style. The day was full of support for each other, providing inspiration and appreciation for finding the “perfect find” and the best bargain. Town & Key represents the reminder of what those days represented — girl time, treasured finds, a priceless spirit, and excitement of what was waiting around the corner.

Our vision started small in Kim’s spare bedroom selling just jewelry. Soon we expanded our product and expanded all over her house! Eventually, we busted out of three rooms, halls and entryways and we knew it was time to find a new home for Town & Key! Almost seven years later we have a headquarters in Plano where we have captured the same spirit of camaraderie and support with our amazing staff and fun fashions everyday!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The rise to our success was gradual and we are grateful for the time we had to build it slowly and organically. Our biggest struggle was learning how to properly manage the logistics of that growth. What was the smartest way to ship, which vendors had the best quality, best prices and learning to manage newfound success and manage the role of motherhood at the same time.

We learned that the right staff is absolutely key. Finding the support to fill in your weaknesses is essential.

We certainly hit bumps along the way. Luckily, we learned something vital at every roadblock that helped us to change, grow and survive in an ever-growing and competitive market.

Town & Key – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Town & Key is a women’s online boutique. We are known for bringing great quality pieces for an amazing price and for customer service that excels. With big-box companies, like Amazon, taking over we know that customer service and specialization are key factors. What sets us apart from those big box companies is that our customers know that when they buy a product from us it’s as if a friend has said, “Yes, you will love it”.

The mission at Town & Key is one we hope resonates with all of our Townies. The vision is to feel confident in your own skin, regardless of your own individual unique style. We offer ageless, timeless, high-quality fashion at an exceptional cost.

We are steadfast and proud in our motto, ” BEING YOURSELF IS THE KEY” and nothing gives us more joy than to see our Townies out and about looking and feeling their absolute best.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
As with any business, we define success in. A variety of ways. We strive to be a profitable company both for our families, employees and our community. Having financial success enables us to provide for our families; allows us to provide valuable jobs to women in our community; and, perhaps most importantly it provides us with the means to be able to support our community by providing too many local charitable organizations! Finally, we also derive a large amount of satisfaction, pride and accomplishment when we see our customers (our “Townies”) wearing our clothes, sharing their photos and posting their gracious and kind comments about our company!
