Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Reed.
Jessica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am that girl that goes to the craft fair and decides to not buy anything because in my head I’m thinking “I can make that.” It doesn’t matter the medium used or how many pieces or parts it took to make it, I am always convinced I can make it. In 2013, I started making small vinyl decals with one of the first generation Cricut machines.
I did fairly well, although I was very limited on what I could do – I started a small business, Dallas Decal Gal. Then the next year for Christmas, my husband got me a Silhouette cameo and that was a game-changer. Once I figured out how to use the new machine I was making not only decals, shirts, bags, tumblers and wine glasses, jewelry, and more! In Spring of 2018, I became an Independent Wine Consultant with WineShop at Home, based in Napa, CA. (because I didn’t have enough going on working a full-time job for my husband’s foundation repair company and the decal business). I do in home wine tastings and offer people quality wines without all the added (unnecessary) ingredients. Taking my love for creating and wine, I made and sold tons of wine shirts and wine glasses for my fellow wine consultants and customers. I decided then to turn Dallas Decal Gal into The Twisted Wine Rack since I was combining both of my passions.
Has it been a smooth road?
I wish I could say it was a smooth road, but with everything there are bumps along the way. It was hard adding another business on top of everything I have going on (three jobs total, three kids, a life outside of all that). As long as I have a support system, I seem to do pretty well and with my family and friends, I have that support.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I like to put it like this, I drink wine and craft, LOL. Hopefully, whatever I create people will want to buy it. It seems to work out pretty well! With the wine business, I offer in home wine tastings (I even do virtual tastings for people outside of the Dallas areas). This allows my customers to try our wines before they buy them. It’s awesome, the wines are created in Napa at our winery there and shipped directly to the customer. They are not full of sugars and sulfates or artificial colors or flavors – just good quality ingredients that keep us coming back for more. As far as what I make/create – the list is long. Mostly I make graphic tees, jewelry (faux earrings mostly), wine glasses and tumblers, coasters, canvas art, and bags. I do however get commissioned to do other things such as refurbish old furniture, paint, make personalized items for gifts, etc. I love being able to take someone’s vision and creating it for them with my own personal twist!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely. Dallas is so diverse and people here are very open to new and different perspectives of things. I think this is a great area to start a new unique business.
