Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Rodriguez and Lizeth Cuyan.
Melanie and Lizeth, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Melanie – I had this idea that I wanted to share my story of rebuilding my life after a tough couple of years with others. I didn’t know how I was going to do that but I knew that my voice mattered. After spending years listening to podcasts and hearing other people’s stories, I got the idea to start a podcast myself but didn’t know how or when to start. When I brought the idea up to Liz, it was like a light bulb went off and we decided to start one together. We had no idea what we were doing or what we had signed up for but with lots of guidance from friends, and help from YouTube, and Reddit, we got the tools we needed to begin Modern Day Mujeres. It’s developed into a sisterhood with several women sharing their experiences and stories with us at an open table with no judgment. I’m proud of this movement and space we’ve made for women to connect with themselves and with us. We’re so grateful for them!
Lizeth – Being a stay at home, I found myself at a point of, “What’s next for me?” I wanted to make more connections, make friends and meet other moms/women who possibly could relate to my current life or past experiences that had shaped me. In the middle of this journey, Melanie had the idea of starting a podcast and something inside me said, “This is the chance you’ve been looking for.” Coming with Modern Day Mujeres was one the most rewarding experience and the connections we have made has been all I had been wanting. It gave me a sense of purpose aside from being a Stay at home mom, almost like my small passion job. Coming up with Modern Day Mujeres has been one of the most rewarding experiences. The connections we have made has been all I had hoped for.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Hell no. It’s been a learning curve to finding the right equipment and software for what we need. It’s all been self-taught and it’s been trial and error for us. With today’s digital world and ever-evolving algorithms with social media, it’s been challenging getting exposure to our audience. We have great listeners, followers, and friends who have helped pave the way for us to be seen and heard. They believe in us and that alleviates some of that pressure off of us.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Modern Day Mujeres Podcast story. Tell us more about your podcast.
Our podcast; Modern Day Mujeres started of as a personal platform for us to share our stories and experiences in hope that it would reach other women or mothers. We host a lifestyle podcast that shares so much we can’t even begin to explain the connection. Our listeners or followers aren’t just that… we have made this a community/sisterhood. It took off into other women wanting to share their personal stories of achievements, failures and now we help small women-owned businesses put themselves out there to be found and give us a bit of insight in their own journeys as well.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
We think attending events that align to what you’re doing is a great way to network and find like-minded people. It has helped us tremendously not only getting our podcast out there but also meeting people who want to help us be better and see our purpose. Put yourself out there and the right people will come into your circle. Having a friend or mentor (or as we like to call him, our business partner) tell you when you need to slow down and focus on one project at a time. Sometimes it’s not always about having someone to tell you yes, but hearing when you need to be told no or not right now.
