Meet Michele Velasco (Moss)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michele Velasco (Moss).

Thanks for sharing your story with us Michele. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Truth be told, I never knew what I wanted to be when I “grew up”. I was always the creative type and knew that my dream would be to put my creativity into action. I lived in Mexico City for six years after high school where I became fascinated with their lavish, over-the-top events and beautiful eye for detail.

When I moved back to the United States, I knew I wanted to become an Event Designer. Michele Moss Events became a huge success and after some time, some of my event clients started asking for help with their homes. I had finally found my true passion! That passion became Michele Moss Design.

My family and I moved to Prosper a year ago from San Diego, CA. I thought the easiest way to establish a client base in my new city would be to start an Instagram account (@thefunkgypsy) and really dive deep into fixing up my new home, documenting every step of the way. A year later, I am a featured designer on Houzz for the DFW area and a relatively well-known influencer in the home decor community. Nothing makes me happier than helping people to make their house, their home.

I also have a small home decor business called Funk Gypsy that specializes in custom and personalized gifts, repurposed vintage, and farmhouse decor.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I was born and raised in San Diego, so naturally, all of my friends and family are there. I had spent many years building a flourishing business and client list. Starting over from scratch has had its moments to say the least, but moving to Dallas has absolutely been the best decision for my family. With the booming economy and countless large companies moving here to DFW, my hope is that there will be an endless selection of new-to-Texas clients needing help with their forever home.

Please tell us about Michele Moss Design / Funk Gypsy.
I would consider myself a Jane of all Trades in all things decorating! In the last few years, the majority of my clients have focused on Modern Farmhouse, Traditional, Bohemian, and Modern Contemporary styles. Surprisingly, I have brought a bit of San Diego to Prosper in my own home, focusing on a Coastal / Boho Farmhouse theme and am seeing that there really is no standard anymore when it comes to decor. I think what sets me apart is that I am constantly researching and really can predict the next big “thing” when it comes to home decorating. I am a universal decorator and can work with any client and style, regardless of budget. My specialty is being “Boujee on a Budget” and love to save my clients money as much as I possibly can.

Funk Gyspy has been a side passion of mine for many years. I create personalized home decor and set up booths at local fairs. It was so important to me to keep Funk Gypsy even though Michele Moss Design has been my career, and Instagram taking the majority of my free time. Hopefully in the future, my hope is that I will be able to expand Funk Gypsy into a permanent brick and mortar.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Honestly, I don’t think I would do anything different. I think having started in the event world and moving over to home decorating has made me unique and what sets me apart from my colleagues. I truly have a gift of being able to do it all when it comes to all things creative. If I absolutely had to pick something, I would say that I would have moved to Prosper many years ago and started this passion a lot sooner.
