Today we’d like to introduce you to KJ Suh and Jessica Lim.
Jessica was just a minority girl who has a ridiculous work ethic. And she spent most of her life with music as she majored in Flute Performance. This specific posture required for practice and performances led to chronic pain and discomfort in the neck, wrist, back, and hips. Tired and unsuccessful from trying many different forms of strengthening exercises, she discovered Pilates as a form of rehabilitation that worked for her after a major surgery that limited her from walking for six months.
Jessica has been teaching Pilates for about ten years and not only she understands the struggle that clients face, she understands what instructors go through. She is the first Korean-American Master Instructor with Peak Pilates in the US that host certification trainings as well as different workshops for instructors to help with their teaching journey.
KJ was IT personnel for almost ten years. He has been active all his life and thought of being active would mean he would be pain-free. Oddly enough, he suffered a number of injuries (Ruptured ACL, Herniated Disc, Torn Meniscus, Torn Ligaments in Ankle, Rotator Cuff injuries to name a few) resulting in muscle compensation and imbalance in his body. Like most guys, KJ brushed off these injuries like it wasn’t a big deal until he met his wife Jessica and took one lesson of Pilates. Learning about body awareness and proper muscle engagement made him realize he kept his body vulnerable for injuries and pain. As KJ started teaching Pilates, his passion for the human body grew. And he is now a Licensed Massage Therapist who is an expert of involuntary bodywork such as soft tissue treatments, facial release, PNF to name a few.
Jessica and KJ had their very first studio in Johns Creek, Georgia where Jessica grew up. The Plano, TX location was established in 2018 as a second studio with a passion to help people understand about movement control. Our boutique studio uses customized Classical Pilates Method and Orthopedic Bodywork to achieve your goals. We are fully furnished with traditional equipment from the most distinguished manufacturer in the field and dedicated to optimizing your overall health.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We have been very lucky to not have any major struggles along our way but we can’t say there had been times of challenges. Since we own a family business, there had been some pain either personally or professionally every time there was any sort of a growth. Growth means there’s a change, and change means some kind of loss is expected. And loss is painful, thus, growth means pain. But we decided to make friends with our pain. And going through pain time to time tells us that we are moving in the right direction.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Pilates Foundations of Texas – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Pilates Foundations of Texas is a boutique Classical Pilates Studio. We pay 1:1 attention to client’s need and uses Voluntary Bodywork and Involuntary Bodywork to achieve their goals. And that commitment and dedication set us apart from others. We are also a Satellite studio for Peak Pilates to be hosting instructor trainings and other workshops to enhance instructor’s teaching skills.
Voluntary Bodywork = Pilates
Benefits of Pilates can include
– Increased flexibility
– Core strength
– Muscle tone
– Range of motion
– Energy
– Relief of pain due to tight muscles and stress
– Enhanced posture
– Overall enhanced sense of well-being
Pilates programs are very successful in rehabilitating the body after injury or surgery. The voluntary program is designed to build individual’s body awareness and balance by stretching and strengthening specific muscle groups while placing no extreme impact on the joints. We call this voluntary bodywork because our clients are able to change and control their own body.
Involuntary Bodywork = Manual Therapy or Orthopedic Massage Therapy
It aims to find the root of your pain and discomfort. We look at your body as a whole and plan our treatments accordingly. We can free up any soft tissue related limitations to your body by altering our facial system with manual therapy. Joint mobilization, myofascial release, and PNF are some of the techniques we use to achieve better muscle and joint function. We call this involuntary bodywork because the therapist is making client’s body change so they can better control their own body.
Who else deserves credit – have you had mentors, supporters, cheerleaders, advocates, clients or teammates that have played a big role in your success or the success of the business? If so – who are they and what role did they plan / how did they help.
We could have not done it alone. There are so many people that trust and support us!
Dr. Hochan Shin from Texas Gonstead Chiropractic in Plano TX has encouraged us with tremendous support and kind words which led to executing our studio to be present here in Plano Texas. He is in charge of structure side of bodywork that we are not able to help our clients with. Not only that, he refers us his clients with very clear direction of his treatment and truly wants them well as a compensation.
Peak Pilates handpicks their Master Instructors and they train us and supports us unconditionally. I have support here locally from Cherry Herzog and Scott Samford who owns Pilates Connections in Dallas as our affiliated studio. Zoey Trap who is the Peak Pilates Executive Director of Education and Training also supports and mentors us as we grow as a Master Instructor. Her knowledge and experience is essential for making Peak Pilates instructor courses as the best education in the world.
Special thanks to our trainees and graduate instructors who represent Peak and us, and most importantly, all of our clients who trust us as movement healers!
