Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle David.
Kyle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up as the son of a preacher, I spent my childhood attending countless church services where my deep love for music began. While learning to play multiple instruments and listening to a wide range of music, I was quickly drawn to the heavy sound and descriptive imagery of Hip Hop. As a lonely, lost kid, hip hop always made me feel like I belonged like the artist was talking only to me. Music was an escape, a place where I could go where only I existed.
My love for Hip Hop developed into a full blown obsession and I spent countless hours writing lyrics, practicing performing and creating and writing anytime I could. When I was able to get a microphone finally, I began recording in a small closet in the apartment I lived in at the time. I had to stand in the closet sideways and put a blanket over my head for soundproofing. It wasn’t much, but when you love something, you are willing to do whatever it takes. I started performing at live shows in 2012 and after the first artist showcase I did, I knew music was what I would pursue as a career. It was the first thing I truly loved doing. Life took a turn in my late teens as I developed an addiction to drugs and alcohol to cope with the pain life had brought me. Music became one of the few places I felt I could go to express myself without any judgment.
I used music to release my feelings and emotions but not always in a positive way, I was angry and depressed and it showed in the music I was making. After years of battling with my addiction, I finally decided to get help, and in 2015 I checked into a rehab facility. After completing a drug rehabilitation program in my home state of Colorado, I decided to move to Texas, where I had family and could get a fresh start.
In 2016, after taking some time away from music and performing to focus on my sobriety, I decided it was time to get back to music with a new mission, to tell my story and impact others. Over the past three years, I have done exactly that, releasing three projects and over twenty singles, all with a renewed passion for being vulnerable and honest with my lyrics and songwriting.
In 2019 I got back on a stage, sober for the first time and performed at an event for addiction recovery in Austin, Texas. As I continue to book shows and release music, I am completely focused and committed to making authentic, relatable music that will impact people in a real way. I am extremely grateful for the opportunities God has continued to provide me and I promise always to use my gift to make Music With A Message. MWAM. -Kyle David Show less
Has it been a smooth road?
My journey through life and music has not always been easy. I struggled for many years with a drug and alcohol addiction, which led to a lot of depression and self hatred. I also dealt with the opinions of people, friends, even family members telling me I would never make it in music and that it was just a stupid dream. When you hate yourself and others tell you the one thing you love is a joke, it becomes very difficult to stay focused and continue working.
Please tell us about your work.
I am a hip hop artist, songwriter and performer. In an industry full of watered down lyrics and garbage content I have made it my mission to be counter-cultural in the lyrics and content I put in my music, I don’t just “rap” I make music with a message.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Moving from Colorado almost five years ago I quickly fell in love with Dallas. I love the energy here, the architecture, the people and the kindness people have shown me. I do miss having the mountains in my view, but I’ve been able to manage.
