Today we’d like to introduce you to Aalyssa Carrillo.
Aalyssa, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Since I was a young girl, I loved the cameras. I was always told how photogenic and camera ready I was. I loved to get creative and express myself through my outfits, hair and makeup. I was that one little sister always begging, “can you take my picture please?” I began pursuing modeling at 18 years old when my older sister first began pursuing photography. I was practically her guinea pig. Through each other we learned a lot about ourselves and at that time I realized I didn’t have much self assurance. When I went off to college, I decided to take a step back from photoshoots as I wanted to focus on self care, such as my inner confidence. At Texas State, I walked in multiple fashion shows and networked with other models and aspiring photographers. When I graduated Texas State and moved back to Dallas, I decided to get back in front of the camera, as I felt I knew my face and body way more than my 18-year-old self. I was continuously told that I should model by others and then it hit me, I was the one holding myself back. I then began collaborating with surrounding photographers, MUAs and stylists in the DFW area. I knew working with multiple faces and lens would allow me to experience diversity and teach me how to adapt to the uniqueness of each photographer, as everyone has their own way of doing things. From every creative I have worked with, I have learned something new about myself. I’ve been presented with paid opportunities through collaborating and networking with multiple creatives, which is very motivating for a model. Now, I continue to expand my portfolio and learn how to excel and perfect myself as a model, as one day, my dream is to take modeling beyond Texas.
Has it been a smooth road?
When I first began modeling, I mostly struggled with my confidence. Most would be surprised because I always carried myself with high esteem, though looking at photographs from my younger years, I could see I wasn’t 100% sure of myself. Not only did I doubt myself, I felt because I was 5’4 with tattoos, I couldn’t define myself as your ordinary model. Sometimes I would look at photos and not see the beauty others would see. I would only see my imperfections. I felt I was more insecure at the beginning of my journey, and over the years, I’ve concluded that the camera will capture how I’m feeling inside. I then realized I needed to take time to become more sure of myself and accept my imperfections. I realized in the modeling industry. There is no limit when it comes to defining beauty. From there, I felt myself grow tremendously and accept my uniqueness as a petite model.
Tell us more about the business.
When collaborating with others, I carry myself professionally and respectfully. Though I will also be sure to show my personality, I feel that’s what maintains my business relations and keeps people wanting more from me. I’m extremely goofy, fun, and most importantly, BOLD. My sister taught me one thing, always be fearless. She was that photographer that had me climbing trees, mossy rocks, sandy hills, and in short dresses in 40 degree winds while still keeping a strong face. I grew up watching America’s Next Top Model, where I was always inspired by the editorial looks, brave women and, of course, the pressure of impressing Ms.Tyra Banks. My goal when approaching a shoot is to try and do something that’ll set me aside from others, get me a callback and of course, GET THAT SHOT.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see myself visiting the west and east coast more often to network and expand my portfolio. New York is the world’s fashion capital and Los Angeles is the land of opportunity. My main goal as of today is to gain enough courage to take a risk, such as moving to the west coast to pursue modeling and acting as a full time career.
