Meet George and Hannah Gomez of Billy L. Nabors Demolition

Today we’d like to introduce you to George and Hannah Gomez.

George and Hannah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
1n the 1960’s at eighteen years old, Billy and his wife Joan bought their first truck and tractor. Billy was the equipment operator; he tore down the houses. Joan drove the truck and hauled the debris to the landfill. With determination and discipline, they grew their business into a multi-million dollar company. To this day, it is still family owned and operated with about 25-30 employees. On any given day you can find Billy doing quality control check, truck maintenance and mentoring the employees.

Billy’s daughter Felicia & my mom is VP. My dad George is CEO. They have been working in the business since the 90’s.

I graduated OU with a degree in Finance in 2015, I came to BND as a business consultant but am now CFO and Operations manager.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Just like starting any business there are always challenges. Since Billy started as one of the only demolition companies in Dallas. He was forced to learn most things the hard way. As the industry grew, the hazards and liabilities became more prevalent. With the governing bodies getting more involved in rules and regulations, it made the demolition process more tedious. With stronger regulations, it increased the quality safety standards.

Outsiders to the industry often see demolition as destructive and pollutant. The demolition industry is actually one of the first that reduced, re-used and recycled before eco-friendly was popular. What most don’t know is that over 85% of the C&D debris is recyclable.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
Billy grew up with six brothers and one sister, they all lived together with their parents in a one bedroom home in Dallas. After renovations it went from a 600 to 2300 sq. ft. home. He worked every day before and after school picking up trash around newly built homes.

At home, they had one cow and a garden. He and his brothers milked the cow in the morning and at night. He worked until dark every day after school. In the fourth grade he was voted most unlikely to succeed.

He finished school through the ninth grade and met his now wife, Joan the summer after the school year ended.

His mother signed for him to buy a truck when he was 16, he also bought a dump bed to put on the truck.

A tractor purchase came soon after, when he was only 18. That’s when his demolition business started.

All Billy has known his whole life was to work hard to make the best possible life for himself and his family. He came a long way, building a path to the multi-million dollar company we are today.
