Meet Nandi Nelson, LCSW, BCBA of Social Behavior Learning Solutions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nandi Nelson, LCSW, BCBA.

At a very young age I wanted to go to college! My goal was to ensure that I was not a product of my environment being from an urban area in Pittsburgh, PA. Going to college awarded me with opportunities to further my development in leadership and also exposed me to so much more. My first introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorder was during my graduate internship at The University of Michigan. This was a life changing event for me that I believe set me up to be a successful business owner. I took a leap of faith and left my full-time job three years ago and opened Social Behavior Learning Solutions which is a therapy practice for individuals on the autism spectrum. This has been one of the best decisions I have made. Even with the challenges I may face as a  business owner I would not change it for the world. This has also motivated me to share my story and experiences by becoming and author of a children’s book and also a speaker.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Until this day, there are still bumps in the road. I had to learn quickly how to wear many hats such as learning credentialing, billing, client intakes, marketing, accounting, Human Resources, etc. I believe what has helped when those rough patches emerge is knowing when to delegate, knowing where to gain further knowledge or training on specific areas, and to also have others in your respective field that can support you and provide guidance.

Please tell us about the company.
My company Social Behavior Learning Solutions provides Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy to children diagnosed with autism and their families. We also provide school-based consultations and training to organizations. I am most proud that we are able to provide employment to individuals in the state of New Jersey as well as seeing our clients make meaningful progress towards their goals. What sets me apart is that I am extremely involved as a business owner. I know all of the families that we serve personally and make it a point to build relationships with them. I also believe that we live out our values and keep our mission in mind daily through our interactions with families and community members.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I have actually visited Houston, Texas, twice. I love the city and enjoy the people and food! I would also tell my friends till this day that Houston is one of the top 3 places I would choose to live!
