Meet Elbert Tanjaya

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elbert Tanjaya.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Elbert. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started designing back in high school, with very little knowledge to the foundation of fashion design. I taught myself how to sew a simple garment, then turns into creating my own patterns and draping. I also learned the business side of fashion from my retail background.

I started working as a stylist in a womenswear retail store in 2014. After three years, I decided to leave and took a position working on the digital side of retail, focused in products allocation and operations while still designing on the side.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth process. Starting out a collection is very expensive and time-consuming, especially if you have a full-time job while starting a collection on the side. The struggle mostly planning my days between my full-time job and designing. My daily planner has been my “best friend” throughout this process to help me make the time, focus on the task, and get it done.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I specialize in womenswear, from ready-to-wear to hand-beaded couture dress. I think what sets me apart from others is understanding the business side of this industry, knowing my customers, create for them while stay true to my design aesthetic. I believe that knowing who you are as a designer is the foundation to a successful collection.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Everyone have a different definition of success. To me, personally, maintaining a level of productivity, stay focus, stay true to myself as a designer, always have the business mindset of things, as well as being able to tell my story through my wearable art.
