Today we’d like to introduce you to Paige Roberts.
Paige, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I got my start in this industry as a makeup artist who always said she would never do hair. But hey, never say never right? When I was in high school, I was a bit of a theatre nerd and I did a lot of stage makeup for the productions I was in. After graduating, I started doing freelance, and from there went to work for a small makeup studio here in Dallas. It was my hairstylist of 8 years, Stephanie Kingsolver, who finally got through to me and talked me into going to hair school. I did a tour of the Aveda Institute and there was no turning back from there.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say that the road to get where I am today was particularly smooth, but I wouldn’t say it was a bumpy one either. This industry isn’t for everybody and you either have it or you don’t. I truly believe that. I would say the toughest time in my career was spent apprenticing at the Songbird Society. You work a lot of long hours and the work is tough, but the payoff is nothing short of incredible. JT and Richard Hayler took me under their wings and taught me how to fly. For that, I will be forever grateful because I would not be where I am today without their loving support and guidance.
Please tell us about The Songbird Society.
The Songbird Society is a group of individuals who share the same passion and creativity for the art of hair, but execute that creativity in beautifully unique ways. We are a departmentalized salon, meaning we have stylists and colorists. I am a color specialist and I love every faucet of color from blondes to brunettes, and redheads to fashion colors. I guess you could say I’m more known for my love for the ‘lived in’ blonde. I’m all about giving my clients a low maintenance grow out that’s going to be beautiful in every stage. When I’m not creating behind the chair, I work on photoshoots/editorial as well. I was nominated for the North American Hairstyling Awards for Newcomer Stylist of the Year in 2017. I love to work on shoots because they allow me to be creative in other ways that working behind the chair doesn’t allow.
It’s always fun to collaborate with other artists and feed off of each other’s creativity. I’m beyond proud of the safe space that each and every one of my teammates has created for not only ourselves but for our clients as well. We get to come to work and be nothing other than ourselves. I work amongst the most extraordinarily talented and inspiring group of artists. I’m constantly growing and learning from them each and every day. We truly are a family and I could not picture working in an environment without them. We not only have the best team, but we have the most amazing clients as well. Our clients are what set us apart from other salons. They are loving, supportive, and extremely loyal. They are our extended family and the salon would not be what it is today without them by our side.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Everyone who knows me knows that I am a huge hockey fan. My twin brother played growing up and we were always traveling all over the place for the next game or tournament. Being able to spend that time with my family watching him play will always be some of my fondest memories. My whole family is bonded over the sport and we all attend as many games as we can. GO STARS.
