Today we’d like to introduce you to Kandace Gatson.
Kandace, before we jump into specific questions about the company, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a child to a mother who was a little obsessed with cleanliness and fresh scents, there was always a Glade Clean Linen candle burning at all times throughout my home. Lighting candles were second to turning on the lights when you entered a room in my house, so my love for candles just grew and became a staple of home. In the last five years, I’ve traveled all across the country as a Catastrophe Claims adjuster staying anywhere from one to four months moving from state to state. I found myself settling into my hotel room and on my first day off, heading to the local antique and vintage consignments to immerse myself in the history of the new city I was in or to the nearest spot to purchase candles to complete my home away from home. One day, in Minneapolis, MN, I decided to teach myself the art of candle making not only for my comfort but in hopes of creating a unique product of love that others would enjoy.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Creating fragrances and hand pouring wax is a vibe for me. It’s my creative outlet, so is it a struggle to create Gatson candles? No, however, the logistics of business has brought some challenges. I’m new to this, so I’m extending myself some grace and leaning into my entrepreneurial spirit creating a network and asking for help.
We’d love to hear more about your company.
Gatson Candle Co. is a candle company owned and operated by me alone. All candles are hand poured in small batches. Scents emit a strong fragrance throw to promote positivity and peace. I use all natural coconut wax and cotton wicks that contain no parabens. I use various types of vessels collected from the cities I’ve visited. Some are one of a kind. I frequent antique and vintage/consignment shops. I love the look of old things. It’s the history I can see, feel and smell that I’m really in to. You’ll find some recycled candy bowls and dishes from different periods made into bold candles, definitely statement home decor pieces. My candles are also customizable. My smaller tin candles make awesome party favors for your guests!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My mother is who planted the seed that has grown my joy for all things that smell good, look chic, bold yet minimal. My friends have supported me throughout this journey. I have a network of creative women whom I can collaborate with to push my vision for Gatson Candle Co. to great heights.
