Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Evett.
Jeremy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been playing electric guitar for 23 years now, mainly practicing at home and jamming with local musicians. When I first started practicing, I would play about 4 hours a day for the first two or three years. Then it tapered off due to college, work, and social activities. Currently, I play guitar for the technical groove metal band, Spiral Eye. My first cousin, David Evett, plays drums, and we began writing together in 2014 but didn’t play any live shows until February 2018. At the time, we were a three-piece instrumental band, and that September we met our vocalist, Devin Rhame. Over the past two years, we’ve played about 50 shows around Texas and are looking forward to branching out and playing national tours soon.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Getting this project up and running has been a challenge. Being from a small town has made it difficult to find like-minded musicians with a similar drive. I started the band in late 2011 with a completely different lineup, but we disbanded shortly after. One of our songs, “The Weight,” was written during this time period. After that, I put the band on the back burner for a while, but when David and I started jamming together, we gravitated towards a more technical and aggressive sound. We have gone through several lineup shifts, but despite not having a bassist for most of our shows last year, we were fairly comfortable playing as a three-piece. Recently, Wayne Morris (Otis the Axe) has filled the bassist position and added another element of energy to our live shows.
Please tell us about your music.
One of the things we’re known for is being a tight live band. We pour a lot of passion into our song writing and live performances, and our stage presence has become more commanding over the past two years. I also think we do a pretty good job of networking and don’t spend too much time focusing on promoting in one area. David and I live in East Texas, whereas Devin and Wayne are from Austin and DFW, respectively. This makes live rehearsal difficult but also allows us to promote the band more efficiently by having representatives in multiple regions of Texas.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
We’re in the process of recording our first EP, and the first single, “Warhammer,” will be released soon, along with a lyric video featuring some of our recent artwork. I’m incredibly pleased with the quality of music we’ve created for this first album. It encompasses all the things I love about heavy, rhythm-based music and combines a lot of different metal styles. It’s hard to categorize, but it’s mainly groove and thrash oriented, with a lot of progressive death metal elements, such as unconventional time signatures and constant riff modulation. There are also a lot of hooks, melodies, guitar harmonies, guitar solos, and drum solos that will appear on this album.
