Meet Jennifer Lemus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Lemus.

Jennifer, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I wanted to become a hairstylist since I graduated high school back in 2008. Unfortunately my parents did not support my decision to attend beauty school at the time so I ended up enrolling in community college. After attending community college for 2 years I realized that college wasn’t for me and decided to pursue my dreams in the hair industry. I always had a passion for fashion as well as anything that was related to the beauty industry so it only made sense for me to pursue a career in what I was passionate about.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, Ive doubted myself along the way and second guessed myself on wether or not I made the right decision in attending cosmetology school. The biggest struggles that I have faced were right after graduating cosmetology school, I felt that doing hair was not the right path for me so I took a step back and decided to go back and work a regular job. After working a corporate job for 3 months I finally realized that I was miserable working a 9-5 so I decided to apply at a salon and see where the beauty industry took me. I started my hair journey at The MOD Labb, I was there for a year and a half and that’s when I faced my second biggest struggle. I decided that it was time to venture out on my own, I always knew that I wanted to be my own boss but stepping out of your comfort zone is always challenging, I definitely doubted myself and wondered if I would make it on my own outside of a salon. However fear is the only thing that can hold you back from achieving your dreams. A quote that I live by is “if you don’t build your dream, someone else will hire you to help them build theirs”. You can never dream too big! Always take risks and never settle otherwise you will never reach your full potential.

Please tell us about your business.
I am a hairstylist and I specialize in balayage, color corrections and haircuts for mainly Latin women. I am known for taking Latin/Asian women to their desired hair goals without compromising their hair. I am most proud of the fact that I care about each and every person that sits in my chair and that I take my time with every single client during their appointment. Keeping each and everyone of my clients hair integrity intact and not damaging their hair is always my main focus. What sets me apart from other stylists is that I like to take my time with each client,I do everything on my own and I don’t have an assistant. I focus on each client individually and don’t overlap or over book appointments. I prefer quality work over quantity.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The best part of Dallas is that we have so many different cultures and ethnicities so we get to vibe off of different artistic individuals. I feel like Dallas has definitely grown and been put on the map for beauty as well as fashion. We have so many passionate individuals in the beauty industry located in Dallas as well as up and coming fashion designers, beauty entrepreneurs ect. It’s cool to see our city flourish and be surrounded by people who you can be motivated by. I would say that what I like the least about our city and in general I feel like any city faces the same issue is people competing with each other/seeing anyone else who is in the same business as you as competition. There is enough people and enough business to go around for everyone so I feel like no one should ever see anyone else as competition, if anything we should be here to help each other grow as a community as well as uplift each other.
