Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Gilbert.
Chris, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I spent the first few years of my legal career in large international law firms – thousands of lawyers all over the world. It was a great experience, and I represented clients all over the world in multi-million dollar matters. But I always wanted to own my own business. I loved representing entrepreneurs, startups and investors; not just for the work, but because they inspired me.
Eventually, inspired me to leave Big Law and form my own law firm, at a time when a lot of attorneys would consider coasting. It has been challenging at times, but I love devoting my law practice to entrepreneurs as I venture out as one as well. I am now able to do things differently as well – and non-traditionally. I leverage technology, not people; have many alternatives to hourly billing that put skin in the game for the firm and work side-by-side with clients achieving their business goals.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No business leaving the startup phase has not faced challenges along the road. The biggest challenge for a startup law firm is focusing on representing clients that fit your vision and strategic plan, and saying no to those that do not. It is hard to turn revenue down, but absolutely necessary to ensure that the firm evolves in the right direction. Also, we are committed to a work culture that mirrors many of our tech client’s. So we leverage technology, remote and virtual workspaces, cloud computing, legal software and other nontraditional paradigms that reduce costs of operations. In essence, we work like most of our clients have for years, but that is still an adjustment for many lawyers.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a boutique litigation and business law firm that focuses on representing start-ups, investors, entrepreneurs and handles large, complex plaintiff cases on a contingency or some other form of alternative billing. Most proud of the matters we have handled and results obtained since the firm launched. I think we are known for being very good trial lawyers who are also pragmatic and try to obtain the best result for clients even if that is settlement. On the deal side, we focus on counseling distressed companies and finding pragmatic legal solutions for them.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in the country in North Texas where I developed a passion for the outdoors. Growing up, I was hard working, an athlete and competitive, but I had a passion for reading that opened up the world for me. The law was an interest from a young age.
