Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Stone.
Lindsay, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I fell into this passion by accident. I was never that interested in makeup growing up, but I was extremely interested in Art. I studied fine art in college and graduate school, and have been feeding my creative side since I was a kid. In my 30’s, my skin started changing and I became interested in making it healthier and better looking. I can get a little obsessive about learning things, so I researched skincare and read everything I could get my hands on. I started experimenting on my face with new things and one of those things was makeup! I played around with foundations… which led me down a rabbit hole to concealers… which got me playing with blush and bronze… and finally I landed smack dab into into a vast ocean of eyeshadow palettes… and that’s when I knew I was hooked. I quickly realized I had a natural affinity for applying makeup (who knew!) because creating art using makeup brushes and pigment is exactly the same as creating art with any other media – except your canvas is someone’s face. When I started to get more serious about possibly doing this as a career, studied images and artists, became certified, and started doing makeup on anyone who would let me. I was shocked how much I enjoyed it. Before long, I had booked my first wedding and my gosh what a transformative experience that was! I was not expecting to be so moved by my role in helping a woman shine bright on a day her life changed forever. It was amazing. I loved that feeling so much I knew I had found my niche.
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of colleagues I have befriended in the wedding industry, and my invaluable first clients. This group of people recommended my work and booked me without an expansive portfolio or a lot of experience, and while it’s true everyone has to start somewhere, I started with incredibly kind and supportive people in my corner, and for that I am so thankful.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Artistically I can say it has been fairly smooth! Very early on, I discovered I am drawn to makeup that has a natural, timeless feel. You are wonderfully made, so it’s natural for me to celebrate the face your mama gave you instead of trying to turn you into the latest trend or the person you *think* you should look like. And bonus! I enjoy the discipline and concentration it takes to learn how makeup styles jive with varying features, personalities, and skin tones. (Is there anything better than studying fashion and cultural history and devouring makeup textbooks and references?) The overlap between working as a makeup artist and being a mom is where I have tried to find the right balance. My #1 job is my family. My husband and I can very happily and humbly say after years of being told we would never be parents, we were blessed with the most incredible twin girls. They’re three now. As a stay-at-home mom, my family time is my priority which is why specializing in wedding makeup is a great fit for me. It’s the best of both worlds! I get to be home with my girls every day and slip away on the weekends to have some fun with my beautiful brides. My husband (who is my biggest supporter!) and I recently finished building a makeup studio on our property so I can spend even more of my time with the people I care about, and still do what I love.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a certified elite level makeup artist and I specialize in fresh, radiant looks that highlight natural beauty without being overdone. My go-to look is glowy, healthy skin, a great lash, and flirty fresh lips. Thick, heavy, deeply contoured makeup is not my thing. It might look great in pictures, but to me that’s not the goal. Looking Incredible in person AND in photos is the goal! I tell my clients… if you look looney tunes in person just to look amazing in photos, you’re missing out on a critical part of being present on your wedding day and making memories that are just for you – not the camera. I genuinely and earnestly care about every person that sits in my chair. I am keenly aware how intimate putting on someone’s makeup can be. Especially on their wedding day! I get to travel into the inner circle of close friends and family, and it’s truly an honor. When a client has had a few laughs and leaves my chair looking stunning with a huge, confident smile on her face, I’m elated. And then when she says “I just love it!!!” ohhh it’s music to my ears, and to me that sounds like success!
I love getting to know my clients and creating a look for them that only previously existed in their mind. We have loads of fun and lots of laughter – I have even been known to do a dorky little dance to break the ice and calm some pre-wedding jitters. But that’s perfect because makeup is supposed to be fun!
What were you like growing up?
The word awkward comes to mind, lol. I was weird. Pretty shy around new people, and a total weirdo around those I felt comfortable with. I had incredible friends (we’re still friends today) but I was not the popular kid by a long shot. I didn’t have a very high opinion of who I was or how I looked – which in retrospect, I’m pretty sad about. I was interested in singing in the choir, playing my viola in the symphony, constantly talking (“talks too much” was on every report card I ever received, no joke) church, math, and anything having to do with school. (nerd alert!) I leaned into achievement and the desire to learn and I’ve been that way ever since. It took me a long time to see my own self-worth and beauty, and I know that heavily influences the value I place on loving the skin you’re in. If I could, I would go back and tell that little girl “you are fabulous!” because any 9 year old that can set up a video camera in her basement to act in a movie she made up (including a soundtrack) with her sister and stuffed animals is pretty amazing.
