Today we’d like to introduce you to Temple Davenport.
Temple, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
While working on my undergraduate degree I was expected to create a project that not only represented who I was, but also touched upon an issue within society. Thus, Versa was born. Versa is a magazine which provided representation, to the otherwise looked over, bi-racial community. Throughout the pages of Versa, the reader would encounter six bi-racial university students. Each providing an in-depth encounter into their day-to-day lives as bi-racial. Similarly, each photograph of the students contained a hidden image depicting the race they do not outwardly portray.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The most difficulty I had in creating Versa was finding bi-racial students to be represented, due to the fact that such a small amount of the population (in the United States) is bi-racial, 10% to be exact. Correspondingly, another obstacle I faced was getting my audience to care about the stories of bi-racial students, and how their lives have been affected by the race the outwardly portray.
Versa – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
To my knowledge there is no true magazine that only depicts bi-racial people. Therefore, I was ecstatic to create the first one. Granted it got no further than a Capstone project, but nonetheless it was created and the bi-racial community was represented.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
The luck I had in creating Versa pertains to those close friends that were present in my life while working on this project. Without certain people aiding me in finding bi-racial students to be in Versa or pushing me to represent not only myself but other bi-racial people, etc. the project never would have gotten very far. Never would I have thought I would be capable of creating a small magazine that represented something so close to my heart.
