Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Morris.
Christopher, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a believer in God and Christ as my Savior. I continue to use the talents that God has provided me, to bless and inspire those around me. I am a Creative who is walking side by side with our Creator. I have a true interest in Art, Architecture, and other Artists. I just love creativity and to create, myself. I believe in simplicity and providing complexity in the details. This is probably why I am so attracted to Modern-style Architecture and Furniture, as well as certain Pop Art and Fashion.
I have been an Artist from my early childhood, as I fondly remember drawing on the Sunday church service programs and making many of my toys from paper goods and other miscellaneous materials. My parents encouraged my creativity by enrolling me in various art and music programs. I would eventually attend the University of Southern California’s Architecture program.
I obtained my Bachelors in Architecture from USC (Go Trojans!), and later my Architectural License in my home state of Texas. In 2002 I was commissioned to design a home in Texas. It was in this year that Chris Ryan design was established. I have since collaborated with many other Architects and Artists on various projects. In 2010 I co-founded Red Leemor mobile to address a need in the Architectural profession, for a site visit report generating application. The Field Scribe architect app was developed to meet that need with much success. The objective was to assist those who work outside of the office, create more time with their families and less time typing at a desk.
In 2015, I began selling digital illustration and photography prints at local markets in the Los Angeles area. In 2017 I relocated to Texas with my family, to my hometown of Fort Worth. I’ve continued to find local markets to participate in and with my family’s blessing, I’ve recently made the decision to open up a mobile store. In January I purchased a pre-owned Airstream trailer and have dedicated my captured time to making improvements to the interior and exterior. As of this month, Phase I of the improvements is now complete. I am now working on a plan to safely open up to the public, given our concerns with the recent pandemic.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has NOT been a smooth road at all. There have been many ups and downs, pauses, and restarts. There have been issues with lack of time, lack of money, lack of time and money, lack of motivation, and many life halting events. I could make a very long list of all the struggles I’ve personally experienced. However, I’m at a place now where I realize these bumps in the road and walls before me, can be used as motivation. I’m learning to hop over the bumps and swerve around the walls. On the other side is a better me.
Please tell us about your business.
My business focuses on uplifting illustrations and photography. Illustrations that are vibrant, playful, and loose representations of everyday structures/items. My photography typically captures the unmodified natural and built environment. With my background in Architecture, I have an eye for detail. However, when I create my illustrations, I capture just enough information to give you an idea of the subject matter. My photographs capture the moment when I see it. I take pride in not over editing my images and I rely heavily on natural lighting.
Lastly, all of my work is God inspired in some form or fashion. I am humbled by the positive expressions of gratitude I receive from onlookers, new and returning customers. I do believe my work serves as a light of positivity where needed, in a world where hope often seems lacking.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I do not believe in luck. I believe that life is as it is supposed to be and that challenges are simply opportunity for growth. In growth, there is success.
