Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Humphrey.
Brandon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a senior in high school during the 2007-2008 school year, I was accepted into the Photography elective class. It was the first time I had held and operated an analog photographic camera. I fell in love with the thought process, along with the developing process. The techniques that were introduced to me led to me finding hidden talent, ‘an eye.’ I surprisingly found out that not everyone sees what I see, even when looking at the same scene. I excelled at putting the course knowledge to the test in the real world.
During that time, I entered contests and won two first-place ribbons before graduating high school. I left grade school with a new skill that I would have never imagined I would possess. I worked that knowledge into handling digital cameras over the next couple of years and gradually swam back to where it all started, film. During my years of only shooting digital, I emulated film looks into my photos. I have a strange connection with analog technology and at a time in my life, I could no longer resist the temptation of shooting with analog cameras. As an artist, I like for my art to speak for itself so I’ve developed a business around my craft to do just that. My photographs are available to photo-lovers as prints protected by frames, designed to be a centerpiece or to strike a conversation, fine art.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, not at all. Knowing that I loved shooting photography, I went down a long road of trying to find my path in “digital photography.” I booked graduate shoots, portraits, and weddings just to find out that that type of photography wasn’t for me. As an introvert (INFJ Personality), booking clients for a photoshoot or getting paid for “event photography” isn’t the best experience!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I created Brandon Humphrey | Fine Art Photography to bring in-depth art back to people’s walls. I specialize in film photography, so there’s more than just clicking a button and placing a filter on it. Every part of the process of putting photographs on your wall is hands-on. From placing the roll of film inside the camera to calculating the settings and manually placing them, carefully developing the film, scanning the film myself and post-editing… you are dealing with an artist from start to finish. It makes me proud to know that I’m giving more value to photo-lovers than the amount of money they’re giving me. Along with every framed print, there’s a life quote and the manual settings that were used to compose the image, because it’s not the framed photo I’m selling, it’s a part of me.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m looking forward to partnering with people and companies to bring my value to a wider audience.
