Today we’d like to introduce you to Tabitha Mahaffey.
Tabitha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My interest in interior design peaked after my husband and I got married 25 years ago. At the time, we lived in Wyoming and there were no interior design programs available so I took as many art classes as I could, which included classes like drawing and color theory. I was hooked. I worked as an interior designer for Ethan Allen in Northern Virginia and shortly went into business on my own. I took a short break from the design world a few years ago to focus on my family. At the time, my children were young. In October of last year, I launched Tabitha Mahaffey Designs. My projects this last year maybe some of my favorite to date. Although most of my clients are in the DFW area, a few projects have taken me elsewhere recently, such as DC, St. Paul MN, and an upcoming beach house in Florida.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I can honestly say it is fairly smooth going now but it wasn’t always that way. During the couple years I stepped back from interior design, I did a lot of internal work. It began with meditation, which led to yoga teacher training and is now leading me into reiki training. Each of these modalities has increased not only my well being but also my business success. The better human I am, the better designer I am. I am hoping to incorporate my reiki training into my interior design business. Interior design is all about creating balanced and beautiful energy in a space so merging the two seems like a natural course to me.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am an interior designer who works mostly with residential clients. I like to incorporate my client’s vision for their space alongside my fresh, crisp, and warm design aesthetic. It’s very important for me that a space is timeless so I work very hard to create homes that are both traditional and modern at the same time. You won’t walk into them and say, “that’s so 2010”. I think great spaces develop over time and my best clients are ones that I’ve worked with for many years. We are always adding layers to their spaces. For example, a space may be calling for a beautiful antique piece and sometimes we have to wait until it presents itself. I don’t believe in filling a space with anything that doesn’t connect to you or make you happy. I am most proud of the fact that I have to wear so many hats as a small business owner and have the ability to do so. Before mediation, I didn’t do that so well.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have worked on me and my well being before beginning my business. Everyone benefits from me being my best self.
