Life & Work with Gloria Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gloria Jones.

Hi Gloria, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Gloria but I go by Glo and I grew up in Peirce County of Washington State. I graduated highschool in 2009 at Henry Foss and I decided to attend Clover Park Tech. for cosmetology at 19 to become a hair stylist. Choosing this career path was different for me because growing up as a child I didn’t do hair, nor was I doing hair in highschool. Towards the end of cosmetology school, I decided to intern for this salon at the Tacoma Mall called Regis.

I was offered to stay at Regis Salon as a Hire on when done with school and when I got licensed in 2011, I started working the NEXT day. Long story short, I ended up realizing how I was being used for being the “new girl” and doing the work others didn’t want to do. I also noticed how much money was being withheld from me so I decided to try out Booth Rent, which is an independent choice (sole proprietor). It was BEST decision I could have made. This goes into how JustGlo Studio became the brand. Once I applied to be a sole proprietor I had to come up with my own brand and at the time my twitter name was JustGlo , so I just ran with that. Fast forward, (2016) I was working on getting my own salon but it had to be renovated and I was second guessing myself if I would be able to afford it because I was NOT pulling out a loan. But after some time to think I just went for it and invested my own money. I turned a pull in a garage into a beautiful Salon. I’ve been a salon owner for about five years now and a licensed cosmetologist for ten years. Not only am I a stylist and a salon owner but I make Units (wigs) and am launching my very own products (hot tools, serum, oil) in a few months. In the midst of my journey, I became a mother to a talented boy and we recently moved to Dallas, TX in 2020. we’re loving it! I love the decision of becoming a cosmetologist because everyday I touch people’s lives in making them feel as confident as they can be. I also love the fact that I can help women love their hair for the HEALTH of it not the length. So many times I’ve seen clients walk in the salon feeling discouraged (personal lives) but leave feeling unstoppable!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It wasn’t a smooth road but I don’t get discouraged easily !! The first year of my career I was considered the new girl at the salon and was doing the “chores” or the clients they didn’t want to do. I chose to do booth rent at the second salon I was told would be “full service” but it wasn’t, so I left to my third which wasn’t bad. It was a studio and I loved the privacy but there wasn’t any windows and I felt secluded from the outside world, lol . Transitioning to the fourth salon it finally felt right but being talked about behind my back for a couple of years by the owner and employees I decided to leave right away.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a true cosmetologist, this is not a hustle but it’s my passion. I specialize in presses, extensions, units (wigs), coloring extensions and I’m known for my growing hands to promote HEALTHY hair. I’m proud that I have encouraged many people around me to have motivation and determination. What sets me apart is I am honest and I educate my clients on why, as I’m performing the service. I believe they should be able to understand their own hair and mimic it themselves if need be. I have great time management, time efficiency, and quality of work. Clients should feel as if they are the only one that matters when sitting in the chair. It’s not just a service but an experience!

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see myself owning a salon here in Texas and opening a few schools throughout the states. In the next 5-10 years I want to be able to educate up and coming stylist my techniques and salon etiquette. I don’t see myself being behind the chair anymore but the Legacy goes on with my products in stores.
