Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyson Gonzalez.
Hi Alyson, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a lifelong educator – 20 years in public education. Teaching young people is what I have always done, but having my daughter at 40 truly re-awakened my drive to not continue in life on “auto-pilot”. My drive to provide opportunities for her keeps me fueled daily. My husband and I had started a pet sitting business five years ago, but when COVID hit, it took a punch since everyone was now working from home and not traveling. When I saw a friend post about her yard cards and tag “Yard Card Queen” in it, I took a look at the website and opportunity and knew this was for me!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Small business ownership is full of challenges and learning opportunities. I believe, first and foremost, besides my experience starting the pet sitting business, I had no business ownership training or education. It was invigorating to do new things but also a bit scary. Learning the ins and outs of business ownership while continuing to teach full time was a lesson in time management. As you can imagine, working around Covid challenges was also a learning experience.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’d say what sets me apart in the Yard Card business is the relationships I form with my clients. Besides creating a custom and beautiful design, I really enjoy collaborating with my clients to be sure their greeting is extra special for their friend or family member. Celebrating the beautiful moments in people’s lives brings me joy!
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The genuine desire to make people’s lives better/easier in whatever way I can.
