Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Evans.
Deep Vellum Publishing was founded in 2013 to bring the world together through literature, by publishing the world’s greatest untranslated books and connecting them with American audiences, making the world a more literary place from Dallas.
Deep Vellum Books, a brick-and-mortar bookstore, cafe, and cultural community center, evolved out of the publishing venture to serve as a venue for underrepresented writers, translators, publishers, and artists, with a selection of books that specializes in independent publishers and events focuses on bridging arts communities in an inclusive, inviting, and intellectually rewarding space.
Has it been a smooth road?
Opening a bookstore is always difficult, but the Dallas area was hungry for more independent bookstores, and we’re grateful for the support we’ve received from every demographic in our community.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Deep Vellum Publishing specializes in publishing translated literature from all over the world. Diversity is the strength of our publishing venture, and so far we’ve published 30 books by 23 authors — 12 women, 11 men — from 17 countries writing in 11 languages, with writers and translators from a wide variety of religious, cultural, socio-economic, and sexual backgrounds.
Deep Vellum Books is an independent bookstore that serves as a home for independent publishers and underrepresented writers, translators, publishers, and artists of all stripes.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas is an amazing city to live and work in, and it’s an inclusive city where it’s easy to start something new and meet tons of like-minded individuals willing to collaborate to strengthen the entire community.
But the city of Dallas itself lacks institutional funding for independent and individual artists and small arts organizations, disproportionately supporting the largest elite arts institutions. The city needs to combine stakeholders — the city itself, foundations, universities, and high worth individuals — to create a more diverse and inclusive arts community that provides support of all kinds to individual artists and arts organizations of all sizes, from the smallest and newest to the oldest and richest.
