Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiki Engel.
Tiki completed cosmetology training in both Thailand and Seattle, Washington. Since relocating to the Dallas area in 2005 she has worked at some of the finer local salons and is now an independent stylist at Connie Lee Studios in the prestigious Willow Bend area of Plano.
Tiki is a cut and color expert and primarily works with Aveda and Bumble & Bumble products. In addition, Tiki has taken advanced training which includes SoCap Hair Extensions and Yuko Japanese Straightening techniques. Tiki believes that a hair stylist should be constantly in training to keep up with trends, fashions, and designs.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being a sole-proprietor is not always a smooth road. Since there is a lot of competition, it is difficult to maintain customer loyalty. Since I lease a station, I have had to deal with my host salon going out of business and have struggled with access to walk-in clients.
Tiki Hair Designs – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a cut and color specialist. I also do Brazilian Blow Out and hair extensions. What sets me apart is that I am able to perform almost any hair service, including technically challenging procedures like color corrections. And if I must say so myself, I am a lot of fun to be around. It’s all about you!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Any good business person knows that success is more than just about money. I derive tremendous self-satisfaction by stepping back and enjoying my “creations” and by improving the lives of others to help them with their self-image and confidence. Another important factor is to constantly be in training to learn the newest techniques and styles.
