Meet Diane Reeve of Action Self Defense in Plano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diane Reeve.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After 15 plus years of teaching martial arts, I found that long-term training toward a black belt was not something that everyone wanted, but they did want to learn how to defend themselves successfully.

The self-defense classes I investigated were primarily taught by men, in less than aesthetic surroundings (usually a gym) and were very intimidating to most women and children – and a lot of men. Action Self Defense (ASD) was created to offer a short-term class or classes in a safe, comfortable environment, and taught by a woman who could prove that anyone – no matter size or strength – could effectively defend themselves.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest challenge was getting enough people who could attend at the same time to put together a group. That’s how Women’s Self Defense parties were developed! In addition, groups such as Girl Scouts, National Charity League, and others have found our programs empowering and a meaningful group experience. More recently, corporate groups have found that self-defense is not only confidence building, it can be a team building experience as well!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Action Self Defense provides a variety of self-defense programs for a wide demographic. Classes include:
– How to Defeat a Bully Without Fighting (includes social media for older children)
– Women’s Self Defense
– Travel Self Defense
– Parent-Child Self Defense ( Our new Dads and Daughters Defense is really taking off)
– University Safety 101 for High school ages and up. NEW is our Overcoming Sexual Assault or Harassment

Action Self Defense has an excellent reputation. We are unique because classes are taught by a woman, proving that size and strength are not essential for effective defense. Many classes are intimidating to women, teens and young girls. Our classes assure a comfortable atmosphere while promoting self-confidence and empowerment We are most proud of the five-star reviews and testimonials – especially from those who have used what they learned in class.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up as an only child of a Dad who wanted to make sure his daughter could not only stand up for herself but could help others do the same.
