Meet Josh Mills of Desert Wind Films in Uptown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Mills.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Josh. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started off as a Broadcast Journalism major at Texas A&M. When I graduated Josh Mills is an award winning Producer/Director who has over 16 years of production and finance experience in both film and television where he has served as Producer, Director, Casting Director, Writer and Production Manager. He began his career at KXAS (NBC 5, Fort Worth, Texas). He moved on to work with Hall of Fame Sports Caster and ex-NFL player Pat Summerall, where he produced business profiles for the Fox News Channel starring celebrity spokespersons such as Cheryl Ladd, Dick Vermeil and Troy Aikman. In 2001, Mills moved to New York and went to work for Warner Brother’s reality division where he was involved with the productions of over 200 episodes of “Change of Heart”, “Elimidate” and multiple pilots. Mills expanded his career in the film industry by studying acting at night. He performed for a successful comedy duo at various Manhattan comedy clubs such as Gotham’s and Caroline’s on Broadway. After relocating to Los Angeles, Mills landed multiple commercials as well as various principle and co-starring roles, working on hit shows such as ABC’s In Justice, Comedy Central’s “Three Strikes” and the CBS Crime Drama The Unit. He’s had the pleasure of working with veteran screen talent including Dennis Haysbert, Robert Partick, Ken Jeong, Gabrielle Dennis and Kyle Maclachlan. Despite his love of the “craft”, Mills’ passion lay behind the lens of a camera, not in front of it.

After teaming up with producing partners TJ Amato and Steven Camp in 2008, he has produced and directed several projects including the feature documentary Sugar Wars and the feature film Brother’s Keeper, starring such talent as Ray Wise, Michael Rooker, W. Earl Brown and Country Music star Travis Tritt.

In 2016, Mills and Camp formed TEN10 Television, teaming up with working partner EUE/Sokolow to provide high-end television content to major networks. Mills is responsible for developing Desert Wind and TEN10’s project roster, as well as operations in production and finance, negotiations with distributors, and strategic planning. A member of The Directors Guild of America, The Screen Actors Guild/The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, and the Lone Star Film Society.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We definitely have had some struggles and growing pains. We opened our first office in Los Angeles in October of 2008. Showbiz is an extremely difficult industry in which to excel. Especially from an independent standpoint. We fortunately found an Angel Investor to come at the beginning and help us build a foundation. We’ve traditionally developed and produced almost everything internally, which means we have to find investors to finance these projects. We’ve recently expanded our expertise into retail and now work w businesses and organizations producing commercials, branding campaigns, industrials, etc.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Desert Wind Films – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We’ve been open almost a decade. That’s a tremendous accomplishment for an independent production company. We specialize in feature film and television formats, and have quickly proven that that our experience translates well into retail production, producing several commercial and marketing pieces since moving to Dallas-Fort Worth. As for a couple of notable projects, we sold a documentary entitled ‘Sugar Wars, the Rise and fall of the Cleveland Mafia’ to Gravitas a couple of years ago, we had a theatrical release of a period faith based crime drama ‘Brother’s Keeper’ which hit theaters in 2015. Most recently, we produced several pilots and have an Indy psychological thriller, MUSE that is currently making its round in the festival circuit and has a small theatrical release late next month.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are looking to continue our exciting path in Television development and production, but will always hold true to our passion of telling good stories through independent film. In addition, we want to continue to grow locally here in DFW, providing our services for retail businesses and foundations.
