Today we’d like to introduce you to Randy Hu.
Randy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am of Plano-born Taiwanese descent, and during my childhood my parents would take me to Taiwan yearly where I learned to love Asian cuisine and most specifically, boba tea. In 2013 I moved to Uptown Dallas and quickly realized that there was a lack of authentic and high-quality boba tea in the area, and at the time, food trucks were starting to trend so I decided to open Dallas’ first boba tea food truck. Our mission is to bring authentic boba tea to Dallas, a unique brand with our focus on cutesy and Asian designs and merchandise, and also to create drinks that are superior in quality and ingredients – no high fructose corn syrup, artisanal tea leaves, filtered water and fresh fruit purees. Fast forward to 2017 – we have expanded to two food trucks, two brick and mortar stores, and many other projects coming up!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No successful business has smooth sailing! Issues ranging from rain cancelling high-traffic events, food truck breaking down on the way to a 1000-person catering, years of begging event coordinators to let us into their events, finding a reliable workforce (our team is AMAZING now!), educating Dallas that boba tea isn’t something to be scared of, and so on. But hard work and support from amazing people has helped us reach where we are today!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a Dallas’ first gourmet Taiwanese dessert/drink truck and tea shop called Bobaddiction serving Taiwanese boba tea, Hong-Kong style egg waffles, Taiwanese shaved snow, mochi ice cream and much more. We’ve done over 2000 events and 500 catering gigs in the DFW metroplex and have been featured on several news sites such as ABC, FOX4 and CBS and were voted Dallas Cityvoter Best Tea House 2016, Dallas A-List Best Food Truck 2014 and Dallas Observer Top 5 Food Trucks 2015 and 2016. We are proud to have some of the best ratings for boba tea in the DFW metroplex and amazing merchandise that our fans LOVE. Our goal is to have an amazing brand like Sanrio, but with more “edge” (hence the “addiction” of Bobaddiction), selling cutesy merchandise but also providing the highest quality boba tea. We allow free samples of any drink – our motto is “try it, like it, buy it!”
What were you like growing up?
I grew up loving programming and graphics design, but hated the 9 to 5 cubicle jobs. I worked for 10 years in the tech industry before starting Bobaddiction – I was simply fed up with writing code and also working for someone else. I am also one who loves sharing my culture and interests, which happen to be cute designs and boba tea. So I guess opening a boba tea and merchandise empire was my destiny! Aside from business, I love visiting Taiwan and other Asian countries yearly to explore and find new food trends.
